Rutter’s Late Strike Denies Spurs in Survival Blow

Rutter’s Late Strike Denies Spurs in Survival Blow

Tottenham suffered a crushing setback in their fight for Premier League survival as Georginio Rutter scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn Brighton a dramatic draw.

Spurs looked set to end their long winless run and climb out of the relegation zone when Xavi Simons curled in a superb effort with 13 minutes remaining.

However, Rutter struck in the 95th minute to snatch a point and leave Roberto De Zerbi’s side still in danger.

The hosts had earlier taken the lead in the first half through Pedro Porro, who headed home Simons’ cross during a period of Brighton pressure.

But the visitors hit back just before the break when Kaoru Mitoma volleyed brilliantly into the top corner after coming on as an early substitute.

Simons’ second-half goal appeared decisive, following strong work from Lucas Bergvall to win possession high up the pitch.

Yet Spurs were unable to hold on as Brighton pushed late, and Rutter capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire home and silence the home crowd.

The result leaves Tottenham just one point above the relegation zone with five games remaining, while Brighton remain firmly in the hunt for European qualification.

Spurs Showing Fight but Time Running Out

Despite the late heartbreak, there were signs of improvement for Tottenham under De Zerbi.

The return of key players like Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison provided a boost, and the team showed greater energy and attacking intent.

Spurs created early chances and came close to extending their lead, with Simons hitting the post and Porro forcing a save.

However, defensive fragility once again proved costly.

With just a handful of games left, Tottenham are running out of time to secure their top-flight status.

Brighton Keep European Hopes Alive

Brighton continued their strong late-season form, stretching their push for a European place.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side remained patient and grew into the game, creating several chances before and after Mitoma’s equaliser.

Danny Welbeck went close on multiple occasions, while late opportunities fell their way as they pressed for a result.

Rutter’s late intervention ensured Brighton stayed within touching distance of the top six, setting up a crucial clash with Chelsea in their next outing.
