Freddie Woodman Embraces Liverpool Opportunity After Surprise Merseyside Derby Debut

Freddie Woodman admits he never expected to be playing Premier League football for Liverpool — but when his moment arrived, he was ready.

“Did I ever think I was going to be playing for Liverpool in the Premier League? Probably not, but when I'm called upon, I just wanted to do my best.”

Just a year ago, the 29-year-old goalkeeper was sidelined through injury at Preston North End as they battled to avoid relegation from the Championship. Fast forward to today, and Woodman found himself thrust into the intensity of a Merseyside derby after Giorgi Mamardashvili picked up an injury during Liverpool’s victory over Everton.

From Preston to Premier League Spotlight

Signed on a free transfer last summer as Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper, Woodman was making his first Premier League appearance since 2021 — a rare outing at the top level following a career largely spent out on loan during his time at Newcastle United.

After eight years on Tyneside, which included six loan spells and just four Premier League appearances, Woodman rebuilt his career at Preston. He made 138 appearances across three seasons before earning his move to Anfield.

Adapting to Life as Liverpool’s Third-Choice Keeper

The transition to a supporting role at one of Europe’s biggest clubs has not been straightforward.

“It’s tough,” Woodman admitted. “I am new to this role… I quickly realised that my game time is going to be limited and that I would probably be called upon for 10 or 20 minutes — and when that time comes, I just wanted to be prepared.”

Woodman has embraced the challenge, focusing on staying sharp in training and contributing to the squad beyond matchdays.

“Being third choice is more important than I thought. You’re building relationships — if Dom Szoboszlai wants extra free-kicks or Mo Salah wants extra shooting, I want to be there to help.”

Learning From Liverpool’s Stars

Working alongside world-class talent has been a dream scenario for the former England youth international.

“It’s every kid’s dream… You build relationships with players like Salah, Robertson, Van Dijk — you realise they’re just normal people, and it’s been really nice.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot also recognised Woodman’s professionalism, praising his dedication throughout the season after he made a key save to deny Iliman Ndiaye in the derby.

“He said I’ve worked all season without getting much credit — but I’m happy with that,” Woodman said.

Crystal Palace Clash Could Offer Another Chance

With Alisson still sidelined and Mamardashvili facing time out, Woodman could be in line to start against his boyhood club Crystal Palace at Anfield.

“It would be unreal,” he said. “I grew up supporting Palace, was a ball boy there… I’ll prepare this week as if I’m playing.”

Despite the opportunity, Woodman remains grounded and focused on the team.

“I want Giorgi and Ali back fit — but I’ll be ready if needed.”

A Weekend to Remember for the Woodman Family

Woodman’s Liverpool debut capped a memorable weekend for his family. His father, Andy Woodman, celebrated guiding Bromley to promotion to League One — a historic achievement for the club.

“It was a good weekend for the family,” Woodman said. “A bit nerve-racking, but those nerves drive you. You think about the months of hard work for that one moment.”

Liverpool went on to secure a dramatic victory thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute winner — a fitting end to a breakthrough moment for a goalkeeper who had patiently waited for his chance.
