Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge has reached a critical stage, with growing debate over whether Mikel Arteta’s side must change their mindset to stay ahead of Manchester City.
Following City’s 1-0 win over Burnley, the title race is now on a knife edge. Both teams are level on 70 points with an identical +37 goal difference, but Pep Guardiola’s side lead the table on goals scored, with just five matches remaining.
Arteta described the run-in as “a new league” — and the pressure is now firmly on.
After spending 209 days at the top, Arsenal have been overtaken at a crucial moment. A run of just six wins in their last 13 league games — including defeats to Bournemouth and Manchester City — has allowed City to seize control.
At one stage, the Gunners had the opportunity to go 12 points clear. Now, they are chasing.
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes Arsenal must adopt a more aggressive approach if they are to win the title.
Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Podcast, he pointed to the importance of goal difference in tight races.
“Arsenal have been trying to nick 1-0 wins, but they need to change that mindset and go at teams and win by three or four goals.”
Rooney speaks from experience, having lost the 2011-12 title to Manchester City on goal difference in dramatic fashion.
Arsenal’s season has been built on narrow victories:
While tight wins can deliver titles, the current situation — level on points and goal difference — puts added emphasis on scoring more goals.
Arsenal’s attacking numbers highlight the issue:
If current trends continue, Arsenal are projected to finish with a goal difference of around +43, below the typical title-winning benchmark of +50.
Sports psychologist Phil Johnson believes Arsenal’s dip may be mental rather than tactical.
“They’re so close to the finish line that they almost feel like they’ve already won. That slight relaxation can cost you.”
He noted a drop in intensity when Arsenal held a nine-point lead, with reduced aggression and urgency in their performances.
Arsenal face a defining moment as they prepare for their next fixture against Newcastle, starting a matchweek in second place for the first time since August.
Despite the setback, belief remains.
“When Arsenal wake up, they can be absolutely phenomenal,” Johnson added.
With five games left, the title race is wide open — but Arsenal may need to take more risks if they want to stay ahead of Manchester City.
