Tottenham’s Relegation Fears Grow After Costly Leeds Draw Under Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League survival battle took another dramatic twist as a chaotic 1-1 draw against Leeds United left nerves shredded inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Roberto De Zerbi cut a frustrated figure throughout the evening, with the Spurs head coach watching his side squander a golden opportunity to create breathing space above the relegation zone.

Mathys Tel had given Tottenham the lead with a stunning strike, but the hosts failed to capitalise on their advantage. Richarlison missed a huge chance to double Spurs’ lead when he blazed over from close range — a miss that proved increasingly costly as the tension grew.

Tottenham’s inability to close out games resurfaced once again, and Tel’s night quickly turned from brilliant to disastrous. After impressing in attack, the young forward conceded a reckless penalty in the 74th minute with an attempted bicycle kick inside his own area that caught Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu in the head.

VAR confirmed the decision, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted from the spot to rescue a point for Leeds and deny Spurs a crucial victory.

The result leaves Tottenham’s relegation fight hanging in the balance, despite recent wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa under De Zerbi.

The Italian manager’s frustration was evident throughout the contest. He repeatedly reacted angrily to his team’s slow tempo, clashed with officials after leaving his technical area several times, and was eventually shown a yellow card during a tense closing period that featured 13 minutes of stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, De Zerbi admitted the pressure of the situation may have affected his players.

“We didn’t play a great game — we played a good game,” he told Match of the Day.

“I think we deserved to win anyway, but maybe the pressure, the crucial game, the crucial part of the season, we suffered too much.

“We made too many mistakes. If we want to win, we have to reduce the mistakes, but we knew before this game it would be tough until the end of the season.”

The Spurs boss also defended Tel following the costly penalty incident.

“He is young and talented. I will kiss him and hug him. He doesn’t need too many words. He was sorry for the mistake. It can happen to a young player.”

While Tottenham dropped two valuable points, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky emerged as one of the few positives. The young stopper produced two outstanding saves — first denying Joe Rodon before brilliantly tipping Sean Longstaff’s stoppage-time effort onto the crossbar to preserve a draw.

Those saves could yet prove decisive in Tottenham’s fight to avoid relegation.

Spurs’ survival hopes remain precarious heading into the final weeks of the season. If West Ham defeat Newcastle United, Tottenham could slip back into the bottom three before facing Chelsea on May 19.

De Zerbi’s side may also need to improve their alarming home form. Tottenham’s last league win at home came against Brentford in December, with recent draws against Brighton and Leeds further highlighting their struggles in north London.

James Maddison made his long-awaited return from a serious knee injury late in the game and looked lively, but even his introduction could not inspire a winning goal.

With only two matches remaining, Tottenham’s turbulent campaign now appears destined to go down to the final day.
