Semenyo Wonder Goal Seals FA Cup Glory for Manchester City

Antoine Semenyo produced a moment of brilliance to hand Manchester City victory over Chelsea in a drab FA Cup final at Wembley.

For long periods, the showpiece lacked quality and excitement, with both sides struggling to create meaningful chances.

But with 18 minutes remaining, Semenyo delivered the decisive moment with a stunning finish to secure another trophy for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Erling Haaland, who had spent much of the afternoon isolated in attack, finally made his presence count with a dangerous cross into the area.

Semenyo met it perfectly on the move, flicking a superb right-footed finish across Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and into the far corner.

That flash of quality proved enough for City, who added the FA Cup to the Carabao Cup already won earlier this season and ended a recent run of final defeats against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

For Chelsea, meanwhile, it marked a record fourth consecutive FA Cup final defeat and extended a miserable campaign without silverware.

City grind their way to another trophy

This was far from the free-flowing Manchester City performance typically associated with Guardiola’s teams.

Instead, City had to battle through a scrappy and often uninspiring contest before Semenyo’s magic settled the game.

Guardiola’s subdued reaction at full-time reflected the nature of the victory - hard-earned rather than dazzling.

Semenyo, however, once again justified the faith shown in him following his £65m move from Bournemouth in January.

The forward has adapted seamlessly to life at City and continues to deliver in crucial moments.

His winning goal could also prove significant beyond the FA Cup, with City still chasing Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

Guardiola’s side sit two points behind the leaders with two games remaining.

Chelsea left searching for answers again

Chelsea briefly threatened to make a contest of it during the second half as their supporters sensed another famous Wembley comeback might be possible.

But despite improving after the break, the Blues lacked composure and cutting edge in the final third.

That inability to punish City left them vulnerable to the kind of individual brilliance Semenyo eventually produced.

Attention now quickly turns back to the Premier League, where Chelsea still need results to secure European football next season.

A crucial clash with Tottenham Hotspur awaits at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Off the pitch, the club also faces another major rebuild.

Following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior, Chelsea are pushing to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next head coach.

The former Bayer Leverkusen manager remains one of Europe’s most highly regarded young coaches, and his arrival would bring fresh optimism after another turbulent season at Stamford Bridge.

For now, though, Chelsea are left reflecting on another painful Wembley defeat, while Manchester City continue adding silverware to their growing collection.
