France World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard has confirmed his departure from Marseille after spending just one season at the Ligue 1 club on loan from Inter Milan.
The 30-year-old defender announced his exit on social media on Monday, bringing an end to a campaign that started brightly but faded in the closing stages of the season.
“Turning a page with Marseille today,” Pavard wrote.
“Wearing this shirt will remain a powerful experience in my career and in my life. I have always tried to give everything on the pitch and to represent this club with respect and commitment.
“I leave with a lot of emotions, lessons, and the memory of a dressing room that stayed united right to the end. Thank you to the club, the staff, my teammates, and everyone who stood behind us this season.”
Pavard joined Marseille from Inter Milan last summer on a loan deal that included an option to buy. Despite impressing early on, his form dipped over the course of the campaign.
The experienced France international, who was part of the country’s 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, made 37 appearances for Marseille in all competitions during the season.
His final outing for the club came in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash against Rennes at the Velodrome, where he was loudly booed by sections of the home support after coming on as a substitute.
Marseille ended the Ligue 1 season in fourth place with 59 points, finishing well behind champions Paris Saint-Germain, who secured the title with 76 points.
The top-four finish means Marseille have qualified for the third qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League.
