Bruno Fernandes Named Premier League Player of the Season

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been crowned the Premier League Player of the Season after an outstanding campaign that helped drive the club back into the Champions League.

The Portugal international adds the honour to the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Player of the Year award, which he received earlier this month.

Fernandes played a pivotal role in United’s impressive season, contributing eight goals and a remarkable 20 assists in 37 league appearances as the club secured third place in the table.

His assist against Nottingham Forest last weekend saw him equal the record for the most assists in a single Premier League season.

The midfielder has also been the division’s most creative player by a considerable distance, producing 132 chances - 43 more than Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, who ranks second.

Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to win the award since Nemanja Vidic in 2011.

The winner was determined through a combination of public voting and selections made by a panel of football experts.

Fernandes beat competition from Arsenal trio David Raya, Gabriel and Declan Rice, Manchester City pair Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, Brentford striker Igor Thiago, and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.

United conclude their league campaign away to Brighton on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the club has also confirmed coaching staff continuity under newly appointed permanent head coach Michael Carrick.

Steve Holland, Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson have all signed new two-year contracts to remain part of Carrick’s backroom team.

Carrick himself was handed a permanent two-year deal on Friday after impressing during his interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January.

O’Reilly wins Young Player award

Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly has been named the Premier League Young Player of the Season after a breakthrough campaign.

The versatile 21-year-old, who came through City’s academy after joining at the age of eight, scored five goals and provided three assists in 34 league appearances this season.

O’Reilly’s impressive form also earned him his first senior England cap in November, and he has since been included in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup.

He beat competition from several rising stars including team-mate Rayan Cherki, Bournemouth duo Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, Brentford’s Michael Kayode and West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes.
