Barcelona Crush Lyon to Reclaim Women’s Champions League Crown

Barcelona stormed back to the summit of European football with a dominant 4-0 victory over Lyon in Oslo, securing a fourth Women’s Champions League title in six seasons thanks to second-half doubles from Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo.

After a tense opening period, the Spanish champions overwhelmed Lyon after the break as Pajor struck twice before Paralluelo added two late goals to complete a stunning triumph and cap a remarkable campaign for Pere Romeu’s side.

The emphatic victory marked a powerful response to last season’s shock final defeat against Arsenal and confirmed Barcelona’s return as Europe’s dominant force.

Pajor inspires second-half blitz

Barcelona finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half when Patri Guijarro threaded a precise pass into Pajor, who calmly drilled a low finish beyond Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler.

The Polish striker doubled Barca’s lead in the 69th minute after meeting Paralluelo’s inviting cross with a simple close-range finish.

With Lyon chasing a route back into the contest, Barcelona struck twice more in the closing stages.

Paralluelo unleashed a thunderous effort from outside the penalty area in the 90th minute before adding her second deep into stoppage time after being set up by Pajor, sealing a commanding victory in style.

Pajor’s brace took her tally to 11 goals in this season’s competition, moving her ahead of Arsenal forward Alessia Russo as the tournament’s top scorer.

Lyon threaten early before Barca take control

Despite the eventual scoreline, Lyon began brightly and nearly took the lead inside 15 minutes.

Captain Wendie Renard forced a save from Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll before Lindsey Heaps converted the rebound, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Barcelona also came close in the first half when Endler rushed off her line to intercept a through ball, but Pajor lifted her attempt narrowly wide of the target.

Coll was called into action again to deny Selma Bacha’s dangerous free-kick before producing further saves from Vicki Becho and Tabitha Chawinga as Lyon searched for a breakthrough.

But once Barcelona found their rhythm in the second half, they proved ruthless.

Barca complete historic quadruple

The final marked the fourth Champions League meeting between Barcelona and Lyon, but this time the spotlight also fell on the dugouts.

Lyon boss Jonatan Giraldez previously led Barcelona to European glory in 2023 and 2024 before taking charge of the French giants last summer, while former assistant Romeu stepped into the Barcelona role and continued the club’s remarkable dominance.

Pajor once again delivered on the biggest stage, while 22-year-old Paralluelo reinforced her status as one of the brightest stars in world football with a devastating late display.

The victory also completed a historic quadruple for Barcelona.

Having already won Liga F, the Spanish Supercopa and the Copa de la Reina, the Catalans lifted the Champions League trophy to complete a clean sweep of major honours for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign.

The triumph may also represent the end of an era for several club legends.

Alexia Putellas, Mapi León, Ona Batlle and Caroline Graham Hansen are all approaching the end of their contracts, with Putellas receiving a standing ovation when substituted late on.

If this proves to be the final chapter for some of Barcelona’s iconic figures, they signed off in unforgettable fashion.

Lyon left searching for answers

For Lyon, the defeat extended their wait to return to the top of European football.

The French side, winners of eight Champions League titles, were aiming for a record-extending ninth crown and their first since 2022 under new ownership led by Michele Kang.

Although Lyon created the better opportunities early on, they were ultimately outclassed by Barcelona’s clinical finishing and relentless attacking quality.

Giraldez now faces a major rebuilding task as Lyon attempt to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite after being dismantled on the biggest stage.
