Wales captain Ben Davies has made his long-awaited return from injury after being named in Craig Bellamy’s squad for upcoming international friendlies against Ghana and Romania.
The 33-year-old Tottenham Hotspur defender has not featured since suffering a serious ankle injury in January that required surgery, but he is now back in contention ahead of Wales’ preparations for the UEFA Nations League campaign.
Burnley full-back Connor Roberts also returns after nearly a year on the sidelines. The 30-year-old has not played competitively for Wales since suffering a groin injury during the World Cup qualifying defeat to Belgium in June 2025.
Roberts later aggravated the problem with an Achilles injury after returning to Burnley, forcing him to miss the entire 2025-26 season. However, the experienced right-back recently returned to action with Burnley’s Under-21 side and was included in the senior matchday squad against Wolves on Sunday.
Centre-back Chris Mepham is another notable returnee, while Wales will be without Jordan James, Rubin Colwill, Liam Cullen and Mark Harris, all of whom miss out through minor injuries.
Wales host Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, 2 June, before travelling to Bucharest to face Romania the following Saturday.
The clash against Romania will mark the first meeting between the nations since Wales’ heartbreaking defeat in 1993, which denied them qualification for the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Romania are now managed by legendary former Barcelona and Real Madrid playmaker Gheorghe Hagi, who famously scored in Cardiff during that historic encounter 33 years ago.
Hagi was appointed Romania manager for a second spell in April following the death of Mircea Lucescu, who passed away aged 80 after suffering a heart attack.
Like Wales, Romania also failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing their play-off semi-final in March.
Wales will also face Ghana for the first time in their history, with the Black Stars arriving in Cardiff under new manager Carlos Queiroz.
The former Manchester United assistant coach replaced Otto Addo last month after Ghana endured disappointing defeats against Germany and Austria in March.
Ghana, who share a World Cup group with England, Croatia and Panama, also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The friendlies against Ghana and Romania will serve as crucial preparation for Wales ahead of their return to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League in September, where they are set to face Portugal, Norway and Denmark.
