Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after two years in charge, bringing an end to the Dutchman's tenure despite his role in delivering the club's 20th league title.
Slot, 47, enjoyed a dream debut campaign at Anfield, guiding the Reds to Premier League glory in his first season.
However, Liverpool endured a difficult follow-up year, finishing fifth and ending the campaign 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to take over, with Liverpool already holding discussions with the highly regarded Spaniard.
In a statement, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group thanked Slot for his contribution to the club.
"Making this decision has not been easy," the statement read.
"Arne's impact on Liverpool Football Club has been significant, meaningful and ultimately successful.
"We have enormous appreciation for everything he achieved during his time here."
"His professionalism, dedication and expertise reinforced our belief that he is among the finest coaches in the game.
"From our very first conversations with Arne, it was clear he was someone who embraced responsibility rather than avoided it."
Although Liverpool secured Champions League qualification, the club's leadership concluded that a change was necessary after reviewing the team's trajectory following the end of the season.
Chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes reportedly led the decision, believing Liverpool now require a more aggressive and proactive style of football moving forward.
"The conclusion we have reached is based on a belief that the squad's development requires a different direction," the statement continued.
"This should not be viewed as a criticism of Arne's abilities or achievements."
"Rather, it reflects our view that a new approach is needed at this stage."
Slot's coaching staff are also expected to depart, although Liverpool have yet to make a formal announcement regarding their futures.
Iraola has quickly established himself as one of Europe's most sought-after managers thanks to his attacking philosophy and impressive work at Bournemouth.
The 43-year-old was appointed by the Cherries during Richard Hughes' spell as technical director, creating a strong existing relationship between the pair.
Bournemouth finished just one place and three points behind Liverpool this season and secured qualification for the Europa League, further boosting Iraola's reputation.
Slot arrived at Anfield in 2024 as the successor to Jurgen Klopp, who ended his nine-year reign after transforming Liverpool into one of Europe's dominant forces.
His first season could hardly have gone better, delivering a league title immediately and matching one of the club's most cherished achievements.
However, expectations were much higher heading into his second campaign, particularly after Liverpool spent £415 million during the summer transfer window.
The club broke the British transfer record to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million and later secured Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz in a £116 million deal.
Despite that investment, performances regressed significantly.
Earlier this month, Mohamed Salah publicly called for Liverpool to rediscover the "heavy metal" football that defined Klopp's era, suggesting the club had lost its attacking identity.
Liverpool also faced immense emotional challenges during Slot's tenure.
In July, forward Diogo Jota tragically died in a car accident, and the club praised Slot's leadership throughout that difficult period.
"He helped guide Liverpool through one of the most painful moments in recent memory following the loss of Diogo," the statement said.
"The compassion, dignity and humanity he displayed during that time spoke volumes about his character.
"Arne leaves with a Premier League title to his name and a permanent place in Liverpool's history."
"His achievements, particularly winning the league in his first season, will always be remembered.
"We wish him and his family every success in the future and know he will always be welcomed back at Anfield."
Despite the abrupt ending, Slot departs with a league title, Champions League qualification, and a legacy that remains highly respected among Liverpool supporters.
