Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says he leaves Anfield knowing the club remains “among Europe’s elite” after delivering an emotional farewell message to supporters following his dismissal.
The Dutchman was sacked on Saturday, just one year after guiding Liverpool to their 20th Premier League title, as a disappointing title defence ended with the Reds finishing fifth, 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Despite a difficult campaign that included 20 defeats across all competitions, Liverpool still secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Reports suggest the club are expected to begin formal discussions this week with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as they search for Slot’s successor.
In an open letter to fans published by the Liverpool Echo on Monday, Slot reflected on his time at Anfield and described winning the Premier League in his debut season as one of the proudest moments of his career.
“Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and it will remain an important chapter in its history,” Slot wrote.
“For that we should all be proud.
“This club will always judge itself by the biggest honours. That is how it should be.
“But I also leave knowing the club is exactly where it belongs: amongst Europe’s elite. Securing Champions League football was an important responsibility.”
Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in 2024, also praised the resilience and unity of Liverpool supporters during some of the club’s most challenging moments.
He recalled the aftermath of the tragic incident during last year’s title celebrations when Paul Doyle drove a car into crowds in Liverpool city centre, injuring numerous supporters. Doyle was later jailed for more than 21 years after pleading guilty to 31 offences.
The 47-year-old also paid tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain just weeks after Liverpool’s title-winning campaign.
“In one of the most difficult moments this club has faced, the love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary,” Slot said.
“As I leave this club, it would be remiss of me not to say that the way you honoured Diogo and stood together in his memory will stay with me forever.
“The connection we share goes beyond football, beyond European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ being sung from the Kop.
“You made me feel welcome from the start and helped me on the path. That is something I cherish.”
Slot’s departure brings an end to a turbulent but memorable spell at Liverpool, highlighted by a Premier League title and a lasting connection with the club’s supporters.
