Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti says there is no rush to bring Neymar back from injury as the Selecao prepare for their World Cup campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Neymar is recovering from a calf injury that Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said could keep the 34-year-old forward out for up to three weeks. Ancelotti previously suggested the Al Hilal star could return for Brazil’s first or second group-stage match.
Brazil begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13, before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
“He’s progressing well, he’s doing well, we’re in no rush,” Ancelotti said after Brazil arrived in Newark on Tuesday.
Neymar’s place in Brazil’s 26-man squad raised eyebrows, with the forward having not played for his country in almost three years due to repeated injury setbacks. However, he remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals in 128 appearances, and is set for his fourth World Cup.
Brazil arrive at the tournament under more pressure than usual after finishing fifth in South American qualifying and suffering defeats to France, Japan and Bolivia over the past year.
Ancelotti, however, insists his side can challenge anyone.
“We want to compete with opponents, try to do our best, work hard — everyone knows what Brazil’s expectations are,” he said. “There are no favourites. There are some strong teams, and I think Brazil can compete with anyone.”
Veteran midfielder Casemiro echoed that belief, admitting expectations remain high despite Brazil’s recent struggles.
“There are big expectations. It will be tough, but we are very excited. We want to win,” he said.
Brazil will be chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
