DR Congo Friendly Behind Closed Doors

DR Congo Friendly Behind Closed Doors

DR Congo's final preparation match ahead of the World Cup will be played behind closed doors due to concerns surrounding the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the country.

The Leopards are scheduled to face Chile in the French city of Orleans on Tuesday, after the fixture was relocated from Cadiz, Spain.

Local authorities in Cadiz blocked the match from taking place, with the city's mayor issuing a decree as a precautionary measure.

Despite the concerns, none of DR Congo's players are believed to be at risk.

The entire squad is made up of footballers based outside the country, and BBC Sport understands none have recently travelled to DR Congo.

However, some members of the support staff and travelling supporters have arrived from the nation.

The United States, hosts of the 2026 World Cup, require all players and officials entering the country from DR Congo to have spent at least 21 days outside the nation and remain free of symptoms before being granted entry.

DR Congo are currently completing their tournament preparations in Marbella, Spain, following a 10-day training camp in Belgium where they played out a goalless draw against Denmark.

The World Cup marks a historic return for the Central African nation, which has qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1974, when they competed as Zaire.

On that occasion, they exited the competition at the group stage after defeats to Scotland, Brazil and Yugoslavia.

The Leopards will be based in Houston during this summer's tournament and begin their Group K campaign against Portugal on 17 June.

They will then travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, to face Colombia before returning to the United States for their final group match against Uzbekistan in Atlanta.

The current outbreak in eastern DR Congo involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

The World Health Organisation has warned that no approved vaccine currently exists for this variant, with the development of a suitable vaccine potentially taking several months.
