Luka Modric says he is determined to enjoy every moment of what is expected to be his final FIFA World Cup after feeling "rejuvenated" by Croatia's new generation ahead of their opening clash against England.
The 40-year-old midfield icon will captain Croatia against England in Texas on Wednesday in one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.
Competing in his fifth World Cup, Modric remains the heartbeat of Croatia's midfield and is set to earn his landmark 200th international cap during the tournament. The former Ballon d'Or winner recently joined AC Milan after an illustrious spell with Real Madrid and is preparing for one last appearance on football's biggest stage.
Alongside fellow legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric is among the final representatives of a generation that has defined world football for nearly two decades.
Speaking ahead of the England encounter, Modric admitted the opportunity to represent Croatia at 40 years old remains special.
"Every game, every tournament is special at 40 with the national team," Modric said.
"My aim in this tournament is to enjoy it, to do my best, but enjoy it.
"I want to enjoy each match, every training session with these guys."
Croatia arrive at the World Cup after a comfortable qualifying campaign but have attracted little attention heading into the tournament — a familiar position for a side that has consistently exceeded expectations on the international stage.
England, however, know better than to underestimate Zlatko Dalic's men. Croatia famously defeated the Three Lions in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and boast a squad that combines experience with exciting young talent.
Veteran winger Ivan Perisic, 37, remains a key figure, while Manchester City duo Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic add quality and leadership.
There is also growing excitement surrounding 19-year-old defender Luka Vuskovic, who is expected to start against England.
"There are a lot of young players, so I feel rejuvenated with them," Modric said.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic is relishing another meeting with England but is fully aware of the challenge posed by Harry Kane and Thomas Tuchel's side.
"The opponent is high quality," Dalic said.
"We know their quality, we analysed them, and they know us too. They are very dangerous.
"They have the best strikers in the world. They have Kane — Kane can do a lot, a hell of a lot."
Dalic also highlighted England's strength from set-pieces but expressed confidence in Croatia's preparations.
"We are quite prepared for that," he added.
Croatia and England are joined in Group L by Ghana and Panama as the battle for a place in the knockout stages gets underway.
