Kylian Mbappe Matches World Cup Scoring Record as France Overcome Storm Delay to Beat Iraq

Kylian Mbappe continued his remarkable World Cup scoring form with a brace as France secured a 3-0 victory over Iraq in a match heavily disrupted by a two-hour storm delay in Philadelphia.

The Real Madrid star scored either side of halftime on his 100th appearance for France, while Ousmane Dembele also found the net in a game that was suspended during the break due to torrential rain and severe weather conditions.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Mbappe delivered another decisive performance to help Les Bleus maintain their perfect start to the tournament.

Mbappe Reflects on Difficult Night

The French captain admitted the lengthy interruption made it difficult for players to remain mentally focused.

"It was a very long evening. In terms of staying switched on emotionally, it was very difficult because we had to remain focused in the dressing room for almost two hours. That is very difficult and very demanding," Mbappe said after the match.

France coach Didier Deschamps praised his squad's composure during the unexpected delay.

"We stayed calm and relaxed. I was joking with the players. This is a security matter, so I don't blame anyone for it," Deschamps said.

"As soon as there is a risk, we adapt to local laws. These are unusual circumstances, and I hope it won't happen again."

What started as a 5pm local kickoff eventually concluded close to 9pm, but Mbappe ensured the 68,000-plus crowd left with plenty to remember.

Mbappe Equals World Cup Goals Record

The 26-year-old has now scored four goals in France's opening two matches, following another brace in the 3-1 victory over Senegal.

His latest double takes his World Cup tally to 16 goals, equalling the pre-tournament record set by German legend Miroslav Klose.

However, that mark was surpassed earlier on Monday when Lionel Messi scored twice in Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria, moving onto a new record of 18 World Cup goals.

Mbappe insisted he is not focused on individual milestones.

"Leo always scores goals and always will. So I am not looking at what he is doing. I'm just focusing on helping my team," he said.

The France captain has also extended his national team scoring record to 60 goals, having surpassed Olivier Giroud's previous mark of 57 during the opening win over Senegal.

France Secure Last-32 Spot

Mbappe was also asked whether he could challenge France's long-standing record for most goals scored in a single World Cup tournament. That record belongs to Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

"I'm not thinking about that just now. I think it is important to focus on the collective at the moment," Mbappe said.

"I have always scored goals at the World Cup, but the priority is to be at our best as a team. You need to beat the best teams to win a World Cup, so it's going to be very difficult."

France's second consecutive victory in Group I guarantees their place in the last 32. They will return to their Boston base before facing Norway on Friday.

Norway also booked their place in the knockout stages after a 3-2 victory over Senegal in New Jersey. France and Norway both sit on six points, although France lead the group on goal difference and will secure top spot with a draw in their final group match.

"The players and staff had to make a big effort. But we did the job and we are very pleased with how we played," Mbappe added.

Iraq Still Have Qualification Hopes

Iraq remain in contention to progress as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams but must defeat Senegal in Toronto on Friday to keep those hopes alive.

The Lions of Mesopotamia have now lost all five of their World Cup matches across two tournaments.

Defender Rebin Sulaka remained optimistic despite the defeat.

"We stuck to our game plan and executed it pretty well, but France are good. We still have a chance, we are still in the competition, so we have to go back and correct our mistakes and then go out and give everything against Senegal," Sulaka said.

He also downplayed the impact of the lengthy weather delay.

"Of course it impacts the players, but I think if you see how we came out after halftime, we played really good after the break, so I don't think it impacted us as much as you think."
