Co-hosts Canada will look to continue their fairytale 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign when they take on African champions Morocco in a blockbuster Round of 16 clash at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.
Kick-off: 7pm CAT
Canada head into the last 16 brimming with confidence after finishing second in Group B before edging South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32. Stephen Eustaquio was the hero, scoring a dramatic 92nd-minute winner to send the co-hosts into the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
Jesse Marsch's side have impressed throughout the tournament with their relentless high press, athleticism, dangerous set-pieces and unwavering determination. Now, the Canucks are aiming to make even more history by reaching the quarterfinals.
Morocco arrive as one of the tournament's most consistent teams. The Atlas Lions topped Group C with two wins and a draw before eliminating the Netherlands on penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the Round of 32.
The reigning African champions continue to showcase the tactical discipline, defensive organisation and devastating counter-attacking football that helped them reach the 2022 World Cup semifinals, making them one of the favourites to progress.
Canada have been dealt a major setback with midfielder Ismaël Koné ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after suffering fractured tibia and fibula injuries during the group stage.
There is better news regarding captain Alphonso Davies, who returned from a hamstring injury as a substitute against South Africa. While he is expected to be available, he may not be ready to start.
Morocco have a fully fit squad available for selection, with no new injury concerns ahead of the knockout clash.
Coach Mohamed Ouahbi can call upon key stars including Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, Yassine Bounou, Chadi Riad, Brahim Díaz, Azzedine Ounahi and Ismael Saibari.
Canada Head Coach Jesse Marsch:
"Preparing for Morocco is like a gory, horrible nightmare. They are one of the best teams in the world right now.
"Their organisation, their technical quality, their squad depth… it's extremely difficult. But we want to be here and we expect to be here. So we know that everybody's going to write us off, and in that is an opportunity."
Morocco Head Coach Mohamed Ouahbi:
"If we get things wrong, we'll go home. Canada are dangerous. They have intensity, physical power, and they fight until the last second. We must respect them and be at our best.
"No one can stop us if we play our game. But Canada made history by beating South Africa—they have momentum and nothing to lose. We have to be serious from minute one."
Stephen Eustaquio (Canada): The FC Porto midfielder has been central to Canada's impressive World Cup run and delivered the decisive goal against South Africa. His intelligent movement, long-range shooting and late runs into the penalty area make him a key attacking weapon.
Ismael Saibari (Morocco): The newly-signed Bayern Munich forward has been one of the standout performers at the tournament, scoring three goals. His intelligent positioning, movement between the lines and clinical finishing make him Morocco's biggest attacking threat.
Morocco have dominated previous meetings between the two nations, remaining unbeaten in four encounters.
The Atlas Lions have won three matches and drawn one against Canada, including a 2-1 victory in the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Saturday's encounter will mark the first knockout-stage meeting between the two countries at a major international tournament.
