Tom Lockyer Joins Melbourne Victory

Wales international Tom Lockyer has completed a move to Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory, beginning a new chapter in his career after an inspiring return to football.

The 31-year-old defender joins the Australian club on a free transfer after leaving Bristol Rovers at the end of last season, signing following an emotional comeback from serious health setbacks.

Lockyer returned to competitive football in October 2025, almost two years after suffering a cardiac arrest during Luton's Premier League match in December 2023. It was the second time he had collapsed on the pitch within eight months, having previously experienced a similar incident during the Championship play-off final.

Speaking after his arrival in Melbourne, Lockyer said he was eager to embrace the opportunity.

"I am thrilled to have joined Melbourne Victory and cannot wait to get this next chapter of my career under way in such an amazing city.

"This opportunity excites me a lot, as I look to experience new things and challenge myself in a fresh environment. Now it is time to get to work and be ready for every battle ahead."

The experienced centre-back began his professional career with Bristol Rovers before moving to Charlton Athletic. He later enjoyed a successful five-year spell with Luton Town, helping the Hatters earn promotion to the Premier League and establishing himself as one of the club's key figures.

Lockyer made 14 Premier League appearances before his health scare brought his career to an abrupt halt. After receiving medical clearance to resume playing, he returned to Bristol Rovers, where he featured 16 times in League Two during the 2025-26 campaign.

Internationally, Lockyer has earned 16 caps for Wales and was included in the squads for Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His most recent appearance came against Turkey in 2023, and he has previously spoken of his ambition to represent his country again despite the challenges he has faced.

Melbourne Victory will now hope the experienced defender can bring leadership and resilience to their squad as they prepare for the new A-League season.
