Jurgen Klopp is on the verge of becoming Germany's new national team manager after reaching an agreement in principle with the German Football Association (DFB).
The former Liverpool boss held talks with senior DFB officials in New York on Friday, with both parties agreeing on the key terms of a proposed contract.
While discussions will continue next week and an agreement still needs to be reached with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull, the appointment is expected to be finalised soon.
Klopp is set to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement, the DFB confirmed that president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke had held productive negotiations with the 59-year-old.
"DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and DFB vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held their first in-depth talks with Jurgen Klopp regarding his potential appointment as national team coach.
"During the constructive exchange, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract."
"Talks will continue next week."
"Both sides are confident the negotiations, subject to an agreement with Red Bull, can be successfully concluded."
Klopp is expected to sign a four-year contract, marking his first managerial role since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season.
It will also be his first experience in international football.
Since stepping away from club management, Klopp has served as Red Bull's head of global football, a position he took up in January 2025.
He has also been working as a television pundit during the World Cup, despite persistent speculation linking him with a return to club football, including reports earlier this year connecting him with Real Madrid - rumours he dismissed as "all nonsense."
The move would reunite Klopp with Hans-Joachim Watzke, who worked closely with him throughout Borussia Dortmund's most successful modern era.
Their long-standing relationship is believed to have played a significant role in the swift progress of negotiations.
Klopp enjoyed tremendous success during his nine-year spell at Liverpool, winning seven major trophies, including the Premier League title in 2020 and the UEFA Champions League in 2019.
Before that, he transformed Borussia Dortmund into Bundesliga champions twice between 2008 and 2015, while also guiding the club to the 2013 Champions League final.
He began his coaching career at Mainz 05, where he also spent the majority of his playing days.
Germany are hoping Klopp can restore the national team's fortunes after another disappointing major tournament.
The four-time world champions were eliminated in the last 32 of this year's World Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, extending a difficult run that has seen them struggle to replicate their 2014 World Cup triumph.
Following that success under Joachim Löw, Germany failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups before reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 under Nagelsmann.
Although his contract had been extended through to Euro 2028, Nagelsmann opted to step down after Germany's latest World Cup disappointment, paving the way for Klopp's expected arrival.
