England Sweat Over Declan Rice Fitness Ahead of World Cup Semi-Final Against Argentina

England will make a late decision on Declan Rice's fitness ahead of Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against Argentina, although there is growing confidence the Arsenal midfielder will be available.

Rice has been battling a sickness bug that forced him off at half-time during England's dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in the quarter-finals.

Rice's recovery showing positive signs

The 78-cap England international fell ill before the last-eight clash after reportedly picking up the virus during England's last-16 win over co-hosts Mexico.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel revealed after the Norway match that Rice had spent three days confined to bed before taking to the field.

While the midfielder has not yet made a full recovery, his condition has improved significantly over the past 48 hours, increasing optimism that he will be fit enough to start in Atlanta.

Rice is expected to declare himself available given the magnitude of the occasion, but England's medical staff will make the final assessment before Tuchel confirms his starting line-up.

The Arsenal star has also been managing a long-term neural issue affecting his lower back and hamstring for several months.

Despite those setbacks, Rice has featured in all but one of England's World Cup matches, missing only the 2-0 group-stage victory over Panama due to an injury flare-up.

American referee Ismail Elfath appointed

FIFA has confirmed that American referee Ismail Elfath will officiate Wednesday's semi-final.

The 44-year-old has already overseen group-stage matches between Japan and the Netherlands and Uruguay against Spain, along with Norway's last-16 victory over five-time world champions Brazil.

Elfath has shown six yellow cards during the tournament and issued a straight red card to Uruguay midfielder Agustin Canobbio for a high challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. Canobbio confronted the referee and grabbed his shirt following his dismissal.

This will be Elfath's second World Cup, having also officiated at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he served as the fourth official for the final between France and Argentina.

He also made headlines during the 2022 group stage when he shook hands with Vincent Aboubakar before sending off the Cameroon striker for removing his shirt while celebrating the winning goal against Brazil.

A Major League Soccer referee since 2012 and a two-time MLS Referee of the Year, Elfath will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, with Italy's Maurizio Mariani serving as fourth official.

Born in Morocco, Elfath moved to the United States at the age of 18 after winning a US government-backed diversity visa lottery.
