England midfielder Jude Bellingham was involved in a post-match confrontation with Argentina substitute Valentin Barco following the Three Lions' dramatic 2-1 defeat in the World Cup semi-finals.
After the final whistle in Atlanta, Barco—who remained an unused substitute—joined his Argentina team-mates on the pitch to celebrate their victory. As players gathered, Bellingham walked over and appeared to slap the 21-year-old on the back of the head, sparking a brief confrontation involving players from both sides before the Real Madrid midfielder walked away.
The reason for Bellingham's reaction remains unclear. However, television footage showed Barco celebrating in front of the England players after Enzo Fernandez scored Argentina's 85th-minute equaliser.
England looked set to reach their first men's World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead early in the second half. But Argentina fought back through Fernandez before Lautaro Martinez headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into another World Cup final.
Barco, who plays for French club Strasbourg after previously spending time at Brighton & Hove Albion, has made one appearance at the 2026 World Cup, coming off the bench in Argentina's 3-1 group-stage victory over Jordan.
The semi-final itself was fiercely contested from the outset, with referee Ismail Elfath issuing several bookings as the teams combined for 19 fouls in a physical first half.
Bellingham, who finished the tournament with six goals, was also involved in an early exchange with Argentina captain Lionel Messi after Elliot Anderson was fouled in the fourth minute.
The England star later downplayed that incident, insisting it had been blown out of proportion.
"We were really just discussing a foul, actually," Bellingham said after the match.
"It wasn't anything bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing."
England's defeat ended another impressive World Cup campaign, while Argentina advanced to Sunday's final against Spain as they bid to lift the trophy for a fourth time.
