Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has praised the unity and spirit of Spain's national team as they prepare to face Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Writing in an opinion piece for El Pais, Sanchez described the squad as a reflection of a modern Spain that thrives on teamwork and collective talent.
"The team represents a Spain that believes in collective talent to succeed and present itself to the world as the respected and admired country it is," he wrote.
Sanchez, who will attend Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium alongside King Felipe VI, commended the players for their solidarity, team spirit and technical quality.
He also highlighted Spain's attacking style, saying it had captivated football fans throughout the tournament.
According to the Prime Minister, the country will unite behind Luis de la Fuente's side during the final.
"Spain will become one, guided by the spirit of camaraderie that Luis de la Fuente has instilled in this exceptional team," Sanchez added.
The message comes at a difficult time for Sanchez politically, as his minority government continues to face pressure over a series of corruption scandals involving individuals close to him.
Earlier this week, a court confirmed that his wife, Begona Gomez, will stand trial on allegations of influence peddling and embezzlement.
In a separate case, Sanchez's brother, David Sanchez, was banned from holding public office for nine years after being found guilty of administrative misconduct related to the creation of a tailor-made government position.
Former transport minister and close political ally Jose Luis Abalos was also sentenced in June to 24 years in prison for embezzlement and other offences.
Meanwhile, the World Cup has also been overshadowed by controversy following comments from former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who claimed there were "no French players" in France's national team.
The remarks drew widespread criticism in Spain and abroad, particularly after Spain defeated France in the semi-finals, with the French squad featuring several players born in France to immigrant families.
Spain will now look to put politics aside as they chase World Cup glory against defending champions Argentina.
