Manchester United's search for midfield reinforcements has dominated the summer transfer window, but Mason Mount is making a compelling case that the club's answer may already be at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have invested heavily in the middle of the park, spending £83 million to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
However, injuries to Manuel Ugarte and the departure of Casemiro at the end of his contract have fuelled speculation that another midfielder could arrive before the transfer window closes.
Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams have both been linked with the club, while Roma's Manu Kone and Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni have also featured in transfer rumours.
Yet the financial demands of players such as Tchouameni could complicate United's plans, especially with the club also prioritising a left-sided player and attacking reinforcements to support the recovering Benjamin Sesko.
Based on United's opening pre-season performances, though, manager Michael Carrick may already have the ideal solution.
Mount has spent much of his career in an advanced midfield role, but his versatility was one of the key reasons United signed him from Chelsea in 2023 for £55 million.
After two injury-hit seasons, the 27-year-old enjoyed a more consistent campaign last term and has carried that momentum into pre-season.
His performances against Wrexham and Rosenborg have highlighted an encouraging partnership with new signing Andrey Santos.
Santos has looked comfortable operating in a deeper role, collecting possession from the defence, breaking up opposition attacks and dictating the tempo.
That freedom allows Mount to push further forward, exploit spaces between the lines and contribute creatively while still providing energy and defensive intensity.
"I've known Andre for a while," Mount said.
"I've watched him since he broke into Chelsea's first team. He's an excellent player who reads the game really well.
"He's naturally a little more defensive, which gives me the freedom to get forward. We both love competing, making tackles, winning the ball back and playing aggressively. I've really enjoyed the partnership. It's a position I've played since I was young and one I really enjoy."
Beyond his performances, Mount has embraced a leadership role within Carrick's squad.
The England international has regularly been seen mentoring younger teammates during pre-season, including highly-rated academy prospect Shea Lacey, whose impressive display against Rosenborg further strengthened his chances of earning a first-team place.
Carrick also demonstrated his trust in Mount by handing him the captain's armband during the second half of United's victory in Norway after Harry Maguire was substituted.
Mount believes leadership is about setting standards rather than simply being vocal.
"There are different types of leaders," he explained.
"Some are very loud, but I see myself as someone who leads by example and never stops working.
"I've captained teams before and I enjoy the responsibility. Especially when there are younger players on the pitch, I like helping them settle in and making them feel comfortable."
Earlier this year, Mount also stressed his readiness to contribute in any role as United prepare for a demanding campaign that includes Champions League football.
"Next season we'll have a lot more games, which is exactly what you want at a club like Manchester United," he said.
"Whether I start or come off the bench, I'll be ready."
While United are expected to remain active in the transfer market over the coming weeks, Mount's impressive displays suggest the club may already possess the midfield balance they have been searching for.
If his partnership with Santos continues to develop, Carrick could have found a reliable, energetic and technically gifted midfield combination without needing another major investment before the transfer window closes.
