New Crisis Hits Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr

27 July 2026

Saudi club Al-Nassr has suffered a severe blow ahead of the new football season—a campaign that marks the team's return to the AFC Champions League Elite following their Saudi Pro League (Roshn League) title win last season. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) has begun taking urgent measures to address the stifling financial crisis currently facing the reigning Saudi league champions.

According to *Al-Riyadiya* newspaper, the Fund has outlined three main pathways to resolve the club's financial situation.

The first pathway involves restricting certain financial powers held by the current executive management of Al-Nassr. The second entails engaging independent financial, commercial, and legal consulting firms to boost commercial revenue, rationalize expenses, and establish a timeline for restoring the club's financial stability.

The third pathway involves evaluating acquisition offers, with a preference for selling a partial stake rather than a complete exit. The report noted that the executive management would be unable to finalize any new deals—whether for players or coaches—unless the necessary liquidity is secured through the club's own revenues and sponsorship agreements.

It added that the PIF is currently reviewing two serious offers to acquire Al-Nassr, without disclosing the identities of the investors.

The newspaper revealed that Al-Nassr’s debts have exceeded 800 million Saudi Riyals, a result of financial decisions made during the previous season. The report indicated that these measures aim to preserve the club's financial, marketing, and fan-base value, and to prevent debt escalation, all while adhering to the governance standards adopted by sports companies affiliated with the PIF. The report also emphasized that the Fund’s ownership of the clubs is subject to oversight by FIFA and relevant regulatory bodies, ensuring parity among the Fund-owned clubs and non-interference in their direct sporting decisions.

On Saturday evening, Abdullah Al-Majed announced his departure from the chairmanship of Al-Nassr Football Club Company and his return to the ranks of the fans, affirming in a statement posted on his X account that he would support any candidate who leads the club to success.
