Xabi Alonso's first match as Chelsea manager offered an exciting glimpse into the club's future, with Joao Pedro stealing the spotlight in a thrilling 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Brazilian forward struck a devastating nine-minute hat-trick at Sydney's Accor Stadium, headlining a match that showcased Chelsea's attacking firepower but also exposed areas still needing improvement as the Blues continue adapting under their new manager.
Fresh from the disappointment of missing out on Brazil's World Cup squad, Joao Pedro responded in the best possible fashion with a clinical display of finishing, pace and power.
Alonso praised the striker after the match, describing him as "very, very hungry" and "determined to have a great season."
While Chelsea's overall performance was far from polished, with the squad still battling jet lag during their pre-season tour, Joao Pedro was unquestionably the standout performer.
One of the biggest positives for Chelsea was 17-year-old Dastan Satpaev, who scored the first goal of Alonso's reign with a superb finish after just six minutes.
Interestingly, the Kazakhstan international featured as a trialist because he cannot officially complete his move from FC Kairat until 12 August.
Satpaev is regarded as one of Kazakhstan's brightest young talents and is aiming to become the first player from his country to feature in the Premier League.
Alonso revealed he was already familiar with the teenager.
"I knew Dastan from Almaty. He is a ball threat, attacks the inner channel well and is good as a striker coming from the outside. He is really strong, really quick and I have been really impressed with him."
The Chelsea boss also confirmed that a decision on Satpaev's immediate future, including the possibility of a loan move, has yet to be made.
While Joao Pedro and Satpaev impressed, Liam Delap endured another frustrating outing.
The £30 million signing from Ipswich again struggled to make an impact, continuing a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge that has raised questions over his long-term future.
Chelsea are reportedly advancing talks to sign experienced striker Danny Welbeck, 35, with the Brighton forward having already agreed personal terms. Although optimism remains over a deal, Brighton have declined to comment publicly.
The Blues are also pursuing Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, 36, as Alonso looks to add leadership and experience following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
Asked about targeting older players, Alonso explained:
"We need balance, to have a complete squad and make a good team. For that, we have an idea and plan."
Beyond the headline performances up front, several academy prospects impressed during the opening pre-season fixture.
Sixteen-year-olds Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Reggie Watson looked composed in midfield, while 17-year-old Reggie Walsh produced an encouraging display in a more advanced role. Watson was the only player to complete the full 90 minutes.
Eighteen-year-old Landon Emenalo also continued to receive valuable minutes at left-back due to Chelsea's current injury situation.
Alonso admitted before the match that he had been pleasantly surprised by how well the academy players had performed in training, and several justified that confidence with mature displays.
Alonso deployed a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, continuing the tactical structure previously used by Enzo Maresca.
With several senior internationals, including club-record signing Morgan Rogers, still unavailable following the World Cup, the match offered valuable opportunities for Chelsea's next generation.
Aside from Joao Pedro, winger Jamie Gittens was another senior player to impress, scoring his third goal of pre-season after netting twice in previous behind-closed-doors friendlies.
Although defensive issues remain to be addressed, Chelsea's entertaining victory provided an encouraging first glimpse of Alonso's vision, blending experienced stars with emerging talent as the Blues prepare for the new Premier League season.
