Leeds United have agreed a deal worth up to £8.5m to sign Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach.
The 29-year-old is expected to travel to England on Monday to undergo a medical after the German club accepted an initial £6.8m offer, with a further £1.7m potentially due in add-ons.
Elvedi’s move to Elland Road would bring an end to his 11-year spell with Borussia Monchengladbach, where he established himself as an experienced and versatile defender.
The Switzerland international has won 73 caps for his country and was part of the squad that competed at this summer’s World Cup.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke remained cautious when asked about the transfer following his side’s 4-0 pre-season victory over Augsburg.
Farke stressed that the deal would not be considered complete until Elvedi had passed his medical and all the necessary paperwork had been signed.
However, he admitted the club expects progress within the next 48 hours.
Elvedi’s arrival could also pave the way for Sebastiaan Bornauw to leave Leeds.
The fringe defender is expected to join Hamburg on an initial loan deal that includes an option to buy.
Leeds are preparing for their return to Premier League action, with Farke’s side beginning their campaign away to Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
