Coventry City have agreed a deal worth around £17m to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi as they strengthen their squad ahead of their Premier League return.
The Sky Blues are expected to complete the transfer in time for Friday’s season opener against Arsenal.
Awoniyi appeared to say farewell to Nottingham Forest on Sunday when he received a guard of honour from players and staff during their final pre-season friendly against Brest at the City Ground.
Forest manager Oliver Glasner praised the Nigerian striker following the 2-0 victory, describing him as a popular figure who always gave everything for the team.
The 29-year-old joined Forest from Union Berlin for a then club-record £17.2m in 2022.
He went on to score 23 goals in 103 appearances but has recently fallen behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the attacking pecking order.
Awoniyi made just three starts last season, scoring four times across 17 appearances in all competitions, and was also omitted from Forest’s Europa League squad.
His time at the City Ground included a serious injury in May 2025, when he suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with a post during a match against Leicester City.
Coventry are preparing for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years and have been active in the transfer market.
Frank Lampard’s side have already brought Gus Hamer back from Sheffield United and signed goalkeeper Carl Rushworth following his successful loan spell from Brighton.
Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi have also joined the club.
Adding Awoniyi would strengthen Coventry’s attacking options at an important time, with Haji Wright currently injured.
Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms are the other fit senior strikers available ahead of the opening clash with Arsenal.
