Enzo Fernandez Transfer Saga: Why Man City Pursuit Echoes Alexander Isak Deal

Manchester City's pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is threatening to become one of the defining stories of the transfer window, with growing similarities to Alexander Isak's dramatic £125m move to Liverpool last summer.

Chelsea agreed with Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, in late May that the Argentina international could leave for £120m, provided an acceptable bid arrived before 14 August.

That deadline passed without a formal offer, prompting Chelsea to inform Fernandez's representatives that the 25-year-old is no longer for sale this summer.

However, the situation remains far from settled.

Last summer, Newcastle United repeatedly insisted Isak would not be sold before the Sweden striker eventually completed a British-record £125m transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.

Twelve months later, Fernandez could find himself at the centre of another drawn-out transfer saga.

Manchester City Remain Keen on Fernandez

Manchester City, now managed by Fernandez's former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, remain interested in signing the midfielder and reportedly believe Chelsea are still willing to negotiate.

City are reshaping their midfield following Rodri's move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva's departure at the end of his contract.

They are also in advanced talks over an £85m deal for Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City have already spent heavily, signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a club-record £116m, Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for £12.5m and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m.

Should Fernandez and Bouaddi also arrive, Maresca would likely have overseen spending of more than £330m.

Some of that expenditure will be offset by the sales of Rodri and James Trafford, along with the expected departures of Tijjani Reijnders and Savinho. The exits of Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake have also reduced City's wage bill.

Could Chelsea Still Sell Fernandez?

Despite Chelsea's public position, reports in Spain suggest the club remain privately open to selling Fernandez.

High-profile agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, has reportedly been brought in to help resolve the situation.

Fernandez attempted to secure a move to Real Madrid earlier in the summer but was unsuccessful, with the Spanish club later denying they had any interest in signing him.

His position at Chelsea has also been complicated by his relationship with sections of the club's support.

Fernandez received audible jeers when he came off the bench during Saturday's 3-1 friendly victory over Real Sociedad, although other supporters responded with cheers. The mixed reaction continued when he was in possession.

Chelsea remain confident Fernandez can be reintegrated into the squad and underlined that stance by handing him the captain's armband after he replaced Reece James.

Nevertheless, uncertainty over his future remains. A late departure could also leave new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso with limited time to decide whether a replacement is required.

Why the Situation Echoes the Isak Transfer Saga

There are clear parallels with Alexander Isak's Newcastle exit last summer.

Newcastle maintained a firm stance over the striker's future and rejected an initial £110m offer from Liverpool, even as Isak trained away from the squad with former club Real Sociedad.

The dispute continued throughout the window before Liverpool finally announced his £125m signing two-and-a-half hours after the transfer deadline.

Newcastle had already prepared for his potential departure by strengthening their attack, signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m and Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m.

Neither signing delivered as hoped, however, and Newcastle went on to endure a disappointing season.

Chelsea will be determined to avoid similar disruption if Fernandez eventually leaves Stamford Bridge.

Do Chelsea Need a Fernandez Replacement?

Alonso has deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation during pre-season, similar to the system he used when leading Bayer Leverkusen to a historic league and cup double in 2024.

Moises Caicedo and Reece James started as the midfield pairing against Real Sociedad, with Jordan Henderson unavailable through injury.

Romeo Lavia featured from the bench, while Valentin Barco and Dario Essugo were unused substitutes.

Chelsea therefore have considerable midfield depth, particularly in a season without European football, and could potentially cope numerically without immediately replacing Fernandez.

The club also need to reduce the size of their squad before the transfer window closes.

However, Chelsea's previous midfield activity suggests they have explored potential additions.

They submitted a £64m bid for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott earlier this summer and were reportedly offered Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Monaco's Lamine Camara have also been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth insist Scott is not for sale at any price, while Lewis-Skelly is understood to want to remain at Arsenal after providing the assist for the opening goal in their Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Fernandez Future Set to Dominate Final Weeks of Window

Chelsea now face a major decision.

They can resist Manchester City's interest and fully reintegrate Fernandez into Alonso's squad, or reconsider their position if City submit an offer significant enough to change their stance.

As the Alexander Isak saga demonstrated last summer, declaring a player unavailable does not necessarily end speculation when a major transfer remains possible.

With Manchester City still interested and the transfer deadline approaching, Fernandez's future is likely to remain one of the biggest stories of the final two weeks of the window.
