Five Premier League Stars to Watch in the 2026-27 Season

The 2026-27 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, with several high-profile signings ready to make their mark on English football.

From record-breaking transfers to major midfield rebuilds and defensive reinforcements, the new campaign will put some of the league's biggest names under immediate scrutiny. Here are five Premier League players to watch this season.

MORGAN ROGERS (CHELSEA)

Chelsea have made Morgan Rogers the centrepiece of their rebuild under Xabi Alonso, signing the England midfielder from Aston Villa for a British-record £117 million ($158 million).

The 24-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge carrying significant expectations after helping Villa end a 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League.

Rogers will be expected to play a major role in reviving Chelsea following their disappointing 10th-place Premier League finish last season.

His existing friendship with Cole Palmer, developed during their time together in Manchester City's youth academy, could help him settle quickly. However, Alonso faces the challenge of getting the best from two creative players who often operate in similar areas.

With a record-breaking transfer fee attached to his name, Rogers will be one of the Premier League's most closely watched players this season.

ELLIOT ANDERSON (MANCHESTER CITY)

Elliot Anderson briefly became the most expensive British footballer before Rogers' move to Chelsea surpassed his £116 million transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.

The 23-year-old faces a huge responsibility in City's revamped midfield following the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

Spain World Cup winner Rodri has joined Barcelona, while Silva has moved to Real Madrid, leaving new City manager Enzo Maresca with significant gaps to fill.

Anderson earned his move through his intelligent reading of the game, assured passing and composure in possession. Now the England international must prove he can reproduce those qualities under greater pressure.

After two seasons without winning the Premier League, City will be targeting a return to the summit and looking to dethrone champions Arsenal. Anderson's performances could prove crucial to those ambitions.

BRUNO GUIMARAES (ARSENAL)

After deciding against matching Chelsea's record offer for Rogers, Arsenal turned to Bruno Guimaraes to strengthen an already formidable midfield.

The Premier League champions paid £75 million to sign the Brazilian from Newcastle, adding him to a midfield featuring Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Guimaraes brings Premier League experience, aggression, technical quality and composure in possession, giving Mikel Arteta another elite option as Arsenal look to defend their title.

Odegaard has praised how naturally the former Newcastle captain has settled into the squad, highlighting both his ability to win possession and his quality on the ball.

Having previously been a fierce opponent of Arsenal, Guimaraes now has the opportunity to become a central figure in their pursuit of further silverware.

SANDRO TONALI (TOTTENHAM)

Sandro Tonali needed only 10 minutes of conversation to be convinced that Tottenham was the right destination for the next stage of his career.

Now the 26-year-old Italy midfielder must justify becoming Tottenham's record signing.

Tonali established himself as a key figure in Newcastle's resurgence through his relentless work rate, technical quality and ability to influence matches from midfield.

He has now joined Roberto De Zerbi's rebuild at Tottenham, with the club aiming for a dramatic improvement after narrowly avoiding relegation in May.

Tonali has acknowledged the pressure that comes with his transfer fee, but his combination of intensity and quality in possession could make him one of the defining players of Tottenham's new era.

JEREMY JACQUET (LIVERPOOL)

Jeremy Jacquet arrives at Liverpool with the task of helping rebuild a defence that struggled to reproduce the authority of the club's 2025 title-winning back line.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, now 35, endured a difficult campaign alongside a defensive unit that has since undergone significant change.

Ibrahima Konate has joined Real Madrid, while Andrew Robertson has moved to Tottenham, increasing the importance of Liverpool's £60 million investment in Jacquet.

The 21-year-old defender's transfer from Rennes was agreed during the winter window, but he had to wait before completing his move to Anfield.

Van Dijk has acknowledged that developing a partnership with Jacquet will require time. Liverpool, however, will hope the pair can establish that understanding quickly as the club looks to restore stability at the back.

For Jacquet, the challenge is substantial: adapt rapidly to the Premier League and help lead the next generation of Liverpool's defence.
