Jean-Philippe Mateta has taken his contract dispute with Crystal Palace to Fifa as the French striker challenges the validity of the final 10 months of his current deal.
The 29-year-old believes the optional final year of his Palace contract should not be binding, despite the agreement currently running until June 2027.
Mateta initially joined Palace from Mainz in January 2021 on an 18-month loan before completing a permanent move a year later.
He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract that included an option for the club to extend the agreement by another 12 months.
Palace exercised that option in 2024, extending Mateta's stay at Selhurst Park until the end of the current season.
However, the France international is disputing the validity of that additional year.
His case is understood to have already been considered by an independent tribunal under Premier League regulations, with the contract remaining enforceable.
Mateta subsequently took the matter to Fifa, but world football's governing body ruled earlier this week that overturning the contract falls outside its jurisdiction.
Should Mateta eventually succeed in having the final year declared invalid, it could potentially allow him to become a free agent before his Palace contract is currently scheduled to expire.
The dispute comes despite Mateta remaining an important member of the squad.
He started Palace's Premier League opener against Everton on Saturday and has scored 67 goals since arriving at Selhurst Park.
He also played an influential role during one of the most successful periods in the club's history, helping Palace win both the FA Cup and Uefa Conference League under former manager Oliver Glasner.
Mateta's future has nevertheless been uncertain for some time.
He pushed for a move away from Selhurst Park in January and came close to joining AC Milan before the transfer collapsed because of concerns surrounding his knee.
Mateta's contract dispute adds to a difficult beginning to the season for new Palace manager Pierre Sage.
Ismaila Sarr was missing from the squad for the Premier League opener against Everton, with Sage confirming the forward has been dealing with an injury.
Sarr is understood to have missed training for two days because of a groin problem, while Turkish champions Galatasaray have shown interest in signing him.
Palace are reluctant to lose the forward after he scored 21 goals in all competitions last season, helping the club lift the Community Shield and Conference League.
While Galatasaray's interest is believed to be serious, Palace would reportedly only consider an offer significantly above Sarr's market value.
There was further concern during the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park when defender Chadi Riad was stretchered off with another serious-looking knee injury.
Riad has endured a torrid time with injuries since joining Palace in 2024.
He suffered a knee problem in only his second appearance before consecutive injuries kept him out of the squad for more than 400 days.
With uncertainty surrounding key players, a defeat in their opening league fixture and another potentially significant injury, Sage has endured a challenging start to his Palace reign.
The contract dispute represents another dramatic chapter in Mateta's eventful Palace career.
The Frenchman has developed into a cult hero at Selhurst Park, with his trademark corner-flag celebration becoming a favourite among supporters.
His status was strengthened further when he scored the winning goal in last season's Conference League final.
His Palace career did not always appear destined for such success.
Mateta initially struggled to establish himself before his fortunes changed significantly under Glasner.
He developed into one of the Premier League's most dependable forwards, scoring 46 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions under the Austrian.
Those performances attracted attention from clubs across Europe and eventually contributed to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Mateta has never hidden his ambition to compete at the highest level.
His performances also earned him international recognition, with the striker breaking into the France squad in October last year before securing a place in their 26-man World Cup squad.
Palace appeared prepared for his departure in January when they signed Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen in a deal worth up to £48m.
Strand Larsen quickly received the backing of Palace supporters after making his debut in a victory over Brighton, at a time when Mateta's move to AC Milan appeared increasingly likely.
However, the transfer collapsed after Mateta failed his medical, with the knee problem subsequently keeping him sidelined for around two months.
His relationship with sections of the Palace support appeared strained when he was booed following his return against AEK Larnaca in March.
But he responded by helping Palace achieve European glory, scoring in the Conference League final and finishing the campaign with 16 goals in all competitions.
Mateta has been central to an extraordinary period in Palace's history, contributing to a run that delivered the FA Cup, Community Shield and Conference League.
But with his future once again uncertain, the escalating contract dispute threatens to complicate the final chapter of what has otherwise become a memorable spell at Selhurst Park.
