Everton manager David Moyes admits he must "live with disappointments" after the Toffees endured a frustrating end to the transfer window, missing out on several key targets.
A proposed move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun collapsed after the 25-year-old changed his mind following a medical at Everton's Finch Farm training ground.
The United States international emerged as a late target after Guinea-Bissau striker Beto completed a permanent move to Serie A side Fiorentina.
Everton also explored deals for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham but were unable to convince either player to make the move.
The Toffees did secure Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City, although they lost star attacker Iliman Ndiaye to City in a £65 million deal.
"I am disappointed that we didn't do more business and things didn't go our way in the end," Moyes said.
"Sometimes in football you have to live with disappointments and move on, and we will."
Issues identified during Balogun's medical forced Everton and Monaco to renegotiate their initial £40 million agreement.
The two clubs signed a deal sheet before the transfer window closed at 23:00 BST, giving them additional time to finalise the move. However, Balogun ultimately changed his mind and walked away from the transfer.
Moyes insisted there was nothing more behind the collapse of the deal.
"It wasn't anyone's fault and ultimately it happens in football as the player had a problem in his medical and that was simply it," he said.
"There are no other stories behind it. That is exactly what happened."
Moyes revealed that part of the reasoning behind Ndiaye's departure was to generate funds for further additions to the Everton squad.
Ndiaye scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 67 Premier League appearances for the Toffees before completing his move to Manchester City.
Everton also failed to land defender Kenny Tete after Fulham were unable to find a suitable replacement. However, the club did strengthen at right-back by signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon for £3 million.
"We were looking to get some money in," Moyes said.
"We lost Iliman Ndiaye, which is someone who we definitely didn't want to lose, but sometimes it is difficult when the likes of Man City come along.
"Some things went against us and some things we could have done better. Ultimately we didn't want to lose a lot of the different players but for reasons that had to happen."
Everton will now have to move forward with their current squad as Moyes looks to put a difficult deadline day behind him and focus on the challenges ahead.
