Leeds United were denied their first Premier League victory at the Amex Stadium as Brighton fought back to secure a 1-1 draw.
Daniel Farke's side looked set to claim their first away win against the Seagulls in more than 17 years after Jayden Bogle gave the visitors an early lead.
However, Leeds failed to capitalise on several opportunities to extend their advantage and were eventually punished when summer signing Luka Vuskovic headed home Brighton's equaliser with 18 minutes remaining.
The result leaves the two sides closely matched after three games of the new Premier League campaign, with Leeds sitting eighth and Brighton ninth.
Leeds made an impressive start and took the lead after just 15 minutes.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header was initially parried by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, with Ao Tanaka collecting the loose ball before sending it across goal for Bogle to finish into an empty net.
It was Bogle's first Premier League goal of the season and continued Brighton's worrying trend of slow starts.
The Seagulls have now conceded inside the opening 15 minutes in each of their first three league matches.
Leeds almost doubled their advantage shortly afterwards.
Vuskovic was required to clear Calvert-Lewin's effort off the line before Tanaka sent a volley narrowly over the crossbar.
Brighton gradually responded, with Pascal Gross and Diego Gomez producing their first meaningful attempts.
Gomez forced Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford into his first save of the afternoon.
Leeds continued to threaten after the interval, and Verbruggen produced an excellent stop with his feet to deny Anton Stach's low strike.
The visitors then thought they had finally found their second when Tanaka produced a superb first-time finish from Stach's set-piece delivery.
However, the goal was disallowed for offside.
That reprieve appeared to energise Brighton, who began taking control as the second half progressed.
Trafford was forced into three saves in just six minutes as the hosts increased the pressure on the Leeds defence.
Brighton's persistence finally paid off with 18 minutes remaining.
Maxim de Cuyper delivered a dangerous corner towards the back post, where Vuskovic rose to head the ball beyond Trafford.
It was the defender's first Brighton goal since completing his club-record summer transfer from Tottenham.
The Seagulls then had a golden opportunity to complete the comeback in the final minute of normal time, but Gross fired over from close range as Leeds held on for a point.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler will have contrasting views of his team's performance.
After opening their home campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, Brighton would have expected another strong start at the Amex.
Instead, they produced another sluggish opening following their 4-3 defeat at Chelsea.
Brighton struggled both with and without the ball during the first half, allowing Leeds to create several opportunities that could easily have put the contest beyond them.
The second half was a different story.
Hurzeler's team gradually took control and, after Vuskovic's equaliser, looked the more likely side to find a winner.
Gross' late miss ultimately prevented them from completing the turnaround, but their improved display ensured they avoided defeat.
Leeds will return to Yorkshire knowing this was a major opportunity missed.
Farke's side were comfortably the better team for much of the opening period and created enough chances to establish a commanding advantage.
Bogle's opener gave them the perfect platform, while Calvert-Lewin, Tanaka and Stach all had opportunities to increase the lead.
Their failure to find a second eventually proved costly.
Fatigue appeared to become a factor during the closing stages as Brighton pushed forward, with four of the hosts' five shots on target arriving during the second half.
Despite the disappointment, a point at the Amex represents another positive result for Leeds.
Farke's team have now suffered only three defeats in their past 16 Premier League matches.
With five points from their opening three games, Leeds have also made an encouraging start as they look to establish themselves higher up the Premier League table this season.
