The meeting was the first between the clubs in 24 years, and City's victory extended their unbeaten run against promoted Premier League teams to 31 matches.
The statistics suggested a comfortable afternoon for Maresca's side.
City finished with 78% possession, attempted around 800 passes and registered 15 shots, but the narrow scoreline reflected how close Coventry came to earning something from the game.
After requiring two late goals to rescue a result against Bournemouth on the opening weekend, City once again had to work hard at the Etihad.
Nevertheless, three victories from three matches represents an impressive start as Maresca's team continue building early-season momentum.
