Australia international Cristian Volpato has been fined after a second roadside drug test confirmed a positive result for cocaine, New South Wales police said on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old was reportedly stopped for speeding in Sydney in July, when an initial roadside test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine.
Police have now confirmed that a second sample collected at the time also tested positive. A 22-year-old man, widely identified by Australian media as Volpato, was subsequently fined A$722 (US$522).
His driving licence has been suspended since July.
Volpato, an attacking midfielder for Serie A club Sassuolo, represented Australia at the World Cup after switching his international allegiance from Italy shortly before the tournament. He made three appearances during the competition.
Born and raised in Sydney, Volpato moved overseas to pursue his football career and previously represented Italy at several youth international levels before committing his senior international future to Australia.
