Michael Carrick has praised Kobbie Mainoo as a “real joy” to work with after the England midfielder impressed in Manchester United’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Sabah on their return to the Champions League.
Making his first Champions League start, Mainoo completed 81 passes in just 64 minutes, delivering another assured performance as his resurgence under Carrick continued.
The midfielder was largely overlooked by former United boss Ruben Amorim but has emerged as a key figure since Carrick took charge in January.
“He’s a fantastic player, I think it’s pretty obvious to see,” Carrick said.
“The way he’s performing, playing that little bit deeper really and connecting the attacks, starting the attacks and having a massive influence on our games.
“He’s a real joy to kind of have, he wants to learn, he wants to improve, he wants to listen and he expresses himself on the pitch. It’s great to see.”
United strengthened their midfield during the transfer window with the additions of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, increasing competition for places.
However, Mainoo’s growing importance was highlighted when he was left out of the starting line-up for United’s opening Premier League game of the season, a 2-0 defeat at Hull.
The midfielder missed most of pre-season after being part of the England squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals, although he did not play a single minute during the tournament.
Since returning to the starting XI alongside Tielemans and captain Bruno Fernandes, Mainoo has helped transform United’s midfield. The Red Devils have scored 11 goals across their past three matches.
“I think through the middle of the pitch we’ve played some good football at times,” Carrick added.
“I thought some of our attacking play was fantastic.”
Mainoo’s performances have strengthened his claim for a regular starting role as United look to build on their improved form under Carrick.
