The defending champions made an ideal start when teenager Xavi Espart opened the scoring inside five minutes.
Lamine Yamal then converted Raphinha’s cut-back to double Barcelona’s advantage before half-time.
Yamal scored his second goal of the match from the penalty spot just three minutes after the restart, seemingly putting Hansi Flick’s side in complete control.
However, Barcelona lost focus during the closing stages and allowed Levante back into the contest.
Substitute Ivan Romero capitalised on an Espart defensive error to reduce the deficit with 11 minutes remaining.
The goal lifted the hosts, who struck again nine minutes later when Roger Brugué bundled the ball home from close range to set up a tense finish at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia.
Barcelona withstood the late pressure before substitute Karim Adeyemi fired past Matthew Ryan in stoppage time to restore their two-goal advantage and secure all three points.
Flick’s side will next face Racing Santander on Wednesday.
