Veteran Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango will continue his international career after being named in Uganda’s 28-man squad for the start of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 41-year-old returned to international football in August last year after previously retiring from Uganda duty and featured in two of the Cranes’ three matches at the most recent AFCON finals in Morocco.
Uganda endured a difficult tournament, finishing bottom of their group after defeats to Nigeria and Tunisia and a draw against Tanzania.
Onyango’s inclusion in the latest squad suggests the experienced goalkeeper remains firmly in Uganda’s plans heading towards the 2027 tournament. Should he feature at the finals at the age of 42, he would rank among the oldest players to appear in AFCON history.
Uganda have not played an international fixture since the tournament in Morocco but will return to action when they face Tunisia away in Tunis on 24 September in their opening Group H qualifier.
The Cranes will then host Libya at their new stadium in Hoima.
Uganda are set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, but are still participating in the preliminary qualifying campaign.
Following their two AFCON qualifiers, Uganda will play a pair of friendlies against DR Congo. The first will take place away on 2 October before the Cranes host the return fixture three days later.
