Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp has named a remarkable 44-man squad for his first international camp, handing 16 players their maiden call-ups as he begins reshaping the national team.
Teams are restricted to 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers for each match, but the former Liverpool manager has taken the unusual step of selecting a significantly larger group for Germany's four upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Klopp has divided his players into two separate squads, allowing him to assess a wider pool of talent during a demanding international window.
The first group will face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September before hosting Greece in Augsburg three days later.
A second group will then take on Serbia in Munich on 1 October before travelling to Thessaloniki to face Greece on 4 October.
"It's very unusual that you've got four games in two weeks with the national team," Klopp said.
"I want to get to know as many players as possible in that time. It's not an A-team and a B-team, but the two squads have been created in a way that each fits well together."
Klopp replaced Julian Nagelsmann in July following Germany's elimination in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup, marking a third successive early exit for the four-time world champions.
The new Germany boss believes the country's talent pool is considerably stronger than the reaction to their latest World Cup disappointment suggested.
"It really felt like you had the feeling after the World Cup that German football is on its knees and we have no talents, no footballers," Klopp said.
"In the past four weeks, as we've been looking closely, plenty of talents have caught our eye.
"It's a squad for two or three years from now, not just for the next four international games."
Several established names have been left out of Klopp's first squad, including Leroy Sane, Deniz Undav, Leon Goretzka and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Veterans Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger have retired from international football.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen will begin Klopp's tenure as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper, with the coach describing the 2015 Champions League winner as his preferred option "for the moment".
Ter Stegen joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Barcelona during the summer following a difficult period with injuries that restricted him to just 12 competitive appearances over the previous two years.
Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich, the squad's most experienced player with 114 international caps, will retain the captaincy.
The 31-year-old is also expected to move from right-back into central midfield, his regular position at club level.
Undav has been omitted despite being one of Germany's brighter performers at the World Cup. German media reported that the former Brighton forward will be given time to recover from an Achilles tendon injury.
Among the 16 potential debutants are Eintracht Frankfurt forward Younes Ebnoutalib, who was playing in Germany's second division last season, Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch, Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt and Celtic midfielder Mika Baur.
"There's a couple of lads here who will surprise you, that's clear, but we saw something in the lads, plenty of potential, and we want to be part of their development," Klopp said.
Klopp's expanded selection signals a clear focus on Germany's longer-term rebuild, with the new coach using his first international window to assess both established players and emerging talent ahead of the next phase of his tenure.
