Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid in a heated derby to climb above their city rivals into second place in La Liga.
The decisive moment came when Dean Huijsen brought down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area.
Following a video assistant referee review, Huijsen was shown a red card and Alejandro Grimaldo converted the resulting penalty.
Jonathan David then secured the victory by sliding home Simeone’s cross for his third goal in as many league appearances.
Atletico later introduced Julian Alvarez, who received some boos from the home crowd following his attempted summer move to Barcelona.
Antonio Rudiger gave Real hope when he headed in Bernardo Silva’s free-kick, but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.
Real are now six points behind leaders Barcelona, who have won all seven league games, and one point behind Atletico.
They later slipped to fourth following Real Betis’ 1-1 draw at Deportivo.
The victory marked a significant result for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who had lost all three derby encounters against Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese coach’s first spell in Madrid.
Mourinho had previously won each of his six La Liga matches against Atletico between 2010 and 2013.
The first half was scrappy, with Simeone and two Atletico defenders receiving yellow cards.
Cristian Romero also avoided a red card after VAR reviewed his challenge on Jude Bellingham.
Atletico improved after the break and were already the stronger side before Huijsen’s dismissal changed the contest.
The hosts finished with 18 attempts compared with Real’s eight and were worthy winners.
It was Real Madrid’s second defeat in seven league matches since Mourinho’s return.
They are already losing ground on Barcelona, who have maintained a perfect record while scoring 31 goals.
