Pelova Double Powers Tottenham Past Aston Villa

Victoria Pelova scored twice as Tottenham maintained their unbeaten start to the Women’s Super League season with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old, who joined Spurs from Arsenal in the summer, has scored four goals in her past two starts.

She is now level with Manchester City’s Bunny Shaw at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Tottenham dominated from the outset and registered 35 shots, but Villa held firm in the first half.

Lynn Wilms cleared Caitlin Dijkstra’s close-range effort off the line in the 17th minute, while Spurs struggled to turn their other chances into goals.

Pelova broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, tapping in Signe Gaupset’s low cross.

She later combined with captain Drew Spence and struck a left-footed shot in off the bar to double the lead.

Dijkstra headed in Julie Blakstad’s cross for Tottenham’s third, before Cathinka Tandberg reacted quickest when Akane Okuma parried Matilda Vinberg’s long-range effort in the 88th minute.

The result lifts Tottenham to second with three wins from four matches.

Their WSL unbeaten run now stands at a club-record seven games, stretching back to March.

Villa drop three places to 13th and are still seeking their first win after two draws and two defeats.
