Chelsea Show Title Credentials in Arsenal Win

Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal offered an early sign that they are ready to challenge for the Women’s Super League title again.

After losing the crown last season, the Blues have started this campaign with renewed resilience.

Sunday’s win extended their unbeaten WSL run to 12 matches and left them two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Alyssa Thompson scored the only goal after Arsenal goalkeeper parried Keira Walsh’s shot into her path.

Chelsea then held firm under pressure to secure a third consecutive clean sheet.

They have now gone 315 minutes without conceding.

Manager Sonia Bompastor praised her side’s ability to adapt when Arsenal had control of the ball.

Chelsea’s defending showed a discipline that was sometimes missing last season, when Manchester City ended their six-year hold on the title.

There are promising signs elsewhere, too.

Walsh’s developing midfield partnership with Lexi Potter has given her more freedom to push forward.

Melvine Malard, who missed Chelsea’s first two matches through injury, has added energy to their attack and helped lead a higher press.

Thompson continues to provide goals, while Ellie Carpenter offers a threat from full-back.

Chelsea began the season with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, but have followed it with three straight wins.

The result against Arsenal was their strongest statement yet: they can control a match when opportunities come their way and withstand pressure when they need to.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have won only one of their opening four league games.

Chelsea look far more confident as they pursue City at the top.
