Manchester City Women Denied Victory in Dramatic Real Madrid Champions League Draw

Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Jordan Pickford and now Anthony Gordon.

England's core of guaranteed starters appears to have a new member, with Gordon establishing himself as one of Thomas Tuchel's most important players.

The 25-year-old Barcelona winger was one of England's standout performers at the World Cup before earning a big-money move from Newcastle United to the Spanish giants. His impressive international form has continued into the Nations League.

Gordon opened the scoring in England's 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday, having also found the net in Saturday's 3-2 defeat by world champions Spain at Wembley.

His rise has been building since the knockout stages of the World Cup. Gordon assisted both of Kane's goals in England's 2-1 last-32 victory over DR Congo, beginning a run in which he has averaged a goal contribution every 69 minutes.

The former Newcastle winger has three goals and three assists across his past six England appearances. He also won the penalty that helped England secure a dramatic last-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

Gordon has carried that momentum into his club career, already registering five La Liga assists since joining Barcelona.

Tuchel: Gordon Is Defending His England Shirt

Tuchel is known for giving players clarity over their roles and the competition they face for starting positions.

Asked whether Gordon is becoming one of the first names on England's team sheet, Tuchel said the winger is moving firmly in that direction.

"He's getting there. He's defending his shirt, he's defending his position - an excellent performance again after his performance against Spain.

"He was very decisive [against the Czech Republic] and had an excellent goal. It was very, very difficult but the technique and finishing was excellent.

"He scored against Spain so he has decisive actions and he's defending his shirt and his position. He does it on the highest level and he's a very important player."

Gordon combined effectively with former Newcastle team-mate Lewis Hall down England's left and linked up with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the opening goal against the Czech Republic.

Alexander-Arnold, making his first England start in almost two years, is now playing in Spain with Barcelona's rivals Real Madrid.

Gordon said he had been "dying" to link up with the right-back.

"It's a great compliment and it's great to play with him," Alexander-Arnold said of Gordon.

"I tried to get the ball, and try and see what the best play is and try and play forward and create something. And I was able to get the pass."

Kane Hails Gordon as One of England's 'Main Men'

While Kane remains an automatic starter in England's biggest matches, the position on the left of the captain has lacked a consistent first-choice option.

Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden and Noni Madueke have all featured there in recent years, but Gordon now appears to have taken control of the role.

Kane believes his team-mate is proving he belongs among the elite.

"His performances in the last couple of games have been some of his best that he has played in an England shirt," Kane said.

"I think he is just relishing putting the shirt on and being one of the main men in the team. He is an important player for us and he showed that during the World Cup."

Gordon's journey to becoming a key England player has not been straightforward.

He began emerging as a leading option during Lee Carsley's spell as interim manager, but admitted last October that he had only shown "50%" of his capabilities at international level.

His recent performances suggest that potential is now being realised.

Against the Czech Republic, Gordon attempted four shots, more than any other England player. He also registered more attempts than any of his team-mates against Spain.

Since the beginning of the World Cup knockout stage, Gordon ranks among England's top four players for expected assists (0.9), expected goals (0.9), passes into the box (14), touches in the opposition box (29), chances created (eight) and shots on target (five).

His six combined goals and assists since the DR Congo match are level with Bellingham over the same period.

Gordon and Rashford Battle for Left-Wing Role

Gordon's rise has also created an intriguing comparison with Rashford at both international and club level.

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, but the Catalan club decided against making the move permanent. He returned to Manchester United before Barcelona paid £69m to sign Gordon from Newcastle.

Gordon's ability to attack defenders in different ways has become one of his major strengths. He can cut inside, use his pace to beat opponents on the outside or create chances with crosses from wide areas.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Gordon has developed into a crucial player for the national team.

"People raised eyebrows when Anthony Gordon went to Barcelona for the money that he did and Marcus Rashford came back to Manchester United," Robinson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He has become a key part of the England team. There were certain games in the World Cup where he was substituted and he shouldn't have been - I think others should have come off instead of him.

"Gordon [when he is] full of confidence running at pace like he does, he can go either way and he's causing full-backs all kind of problems."

Barcelona Move Changing Perceptions of Gordon

Gordon believes moving to Spain has also changed how his game is perceived.

While his pace and pressing were widely recognised during his time in England, he feels his technical ability and football intelligence are receiving greater attention at Barcelona.

"I always felt in England, people respected me because I was fast and I pressed but they never actually respected the quality and IQ that I play with," Gordon told ITV.

"Only the players I play with ever seem to notice that. I think now I'm at Barcelona and I play a different style, those qualities are highlighted much more and people are actually starting to take notice that I'm not just quick.

"In England, it was never really respected because people just see me as really quick and really aggressive.

"In Spain, they really appreciate my IQ and quality because at Barca, if you're not technical, if you're not smart, you're going to stand out like a sore thumb."

Tuchel is building an England side he believes can challenge for the European Championship in 2028, but the Nations League provides the more immediate target.

On current form, Gordon is increasingly becoming a central figure in those ambitions.
