USA Edge Canada to Complete Perfect Four-Win International Window

USA Edge Canada to Complete Perfect Four-Win International Window

The United States completed a flawless international break with a 1-0 victory over Canada, as teenage forward Justin Ellis scored the decisive goal to give Mauricio Pochettino's side four wins from four friendlies.

The performance lacked the attacking fluency displayed in victories over Mexico, Chile and Peru, but it provided further encouragement for Pochettino's commitment to introducing young talent following the World Cup.

Ellis, 19, scored midway through the first half, redirecting an effort from Alex Freeman into the net. It was his second international goal after also scoring on his debut against Peru.

Canada controlled significant periods of the contest and came closest to equalising after the break when Luc de Fougerolles struck the crossbar.

Pochettino encouraged by USA's young talent

The victory capped an impressive four-match window in which seven of the USA's 12 goals were scored by teenagers. Pochettino also handed debuts to 13 players as he begins reshaping the squad following the team's disappointing last-16 exit at their home World Cup.

Pochettino believes the emerging generation can complement the established members of the squad and eventually help the USA compete with the world's leading national teams.

"For sure, the future with these young talented players, plus the senior players that we have, I think we have a very good mix," Pochettino said.

"I hope we can guide this group of players to reach our best level, and compete in our best way, trying to be with the big national teams in the future."

Pochettino made six changes to his starting XI against Canada, and the USA were forced to show a different side to their game.

Ellis' goal proved to be their only shot on target, with Canada's aggressive pressing and physical approach keeping the Americans under sustained pressure.

"It was a really difficult opponent," Pochettino said. "We made changes, we kept the level. I think we managed really well, we competed really well."

Ellis makes the difference

The USA made a slow start, dropping deep as Canada attempted to impose themselves physically.

Tani Oluwaseyi and Jacob Shaffelburg both tried their luck from distance without seriously threatening the American goal.

Tensions increased when Ellis was fouled outside the penalty area, sparking a confrontation between players. The teenager was left limping but remained on the field, and his determination was rewarded in the 29th minute.

Freeman collected possession on the right, exchanged passes with Malik Tillman and drove into the penalty area. His attempted shot was redirected by Ellis, who guided the ball into the net to give the USA the lead.

A physical first half ended with yellow cards for Oluwaseyi and Gio Reyna, while Freeman sent a volley well over the crossbar.

Ellis was replaced at half-time by fellow teenager Julian Hall as both managers began making changes.

Cole Campbell, 20, was later introduced to become the 13th American debutant of the post-World Cup international window.

Canada denied by the crossbar

Canada continued pushing for an equaliser and created their best opportunity in the 63rd minute.

Substitute Mathieu Choiniere delivered a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area, where De Fougerolles connected with a well-timed volley. USA goalkeeper Brian Schwake reacted superbly, tipping the effort onto the crossbar from close range.

Nathan Saliba then flashed a dangerous cross across the face of goal, but no Canadian player could provide the finishing touch.

Canada's opportunities gradually disappeared as the contest entered its closing stages, allowing the USA to protect their narrow advantage and complete a perfect international window.

For Pochettino, four consecutive victories and the emergence of a new generation of American talent provided further encouragement as he looks to build a team capable of competing with the world's elite.
