USWNT Fight Back From Two Goals Down to Earn Dramatic 2-2 Draw Against Spain

The United States women's national team produced an impressive second-half comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against world champions Spain on Tuesday, with Mallory Swanson scoring a dramatic late equaliser in their second international friendly.

After suffering a 2-0 defeat to Spain in Washington on Saturday, the Americans appeared headed for another loss when Alexia Putellas and Salma Paralluelo struck five minutes apart in the first half at Subaru Park, home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union.

However, Ashley Sanchez pulled a goal back shortly after half-time before Swanson completed the comeback in the 86th minute.

The United States nearly snatched victory in stoppage time, but Spain goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez produced an excellent save to deny Lily Yohannes.

Spain Take Control With Quick First-Half Double

Spain started strongly and demonstrated the attacking quality that has made them one of the world's leading international sides.

Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas opened the scoring with a close-range finish following an excellent attacking move.

Clara Serrajordi delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Clara Pinedo cleverly allowed the ball to run through her legs, leaving Putellas with a straightforward finish.

Just five minutes later, Spain doubled their advantage through Salma Paralluelo.

US goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce failed to clear the ball effectively, allowing Spain to regain possession in a dangerous position. Paralluelo capitalised on the mistake, firing a powerful effort in off the crossbar.

The visitors looked firmly in control at half-time, with the United States struggling to contain Spain's attacking movement.

Ashley Sanchez Sparks USWNT Comeback

The Americans responded immediately after the interval, reducing the deficit in the 49th minute through Ashley Sanchez.

Sophia Wilson surged into Spain's half before attempting to find Sanchez on the left. Although the pass was overhit, Sanchez recovered possession and turned back towards goal.

From a tight angle near the corner of the six-yard box, she produced an excellent finish into the far corner to give the hosts renewed hope.

The goal changed the momentum of the contest, with the United States growing in confidence as they searched for an equaliser.

Both teams made several substitutions during the second half as they continued preparations for next year's Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Mallory Swanson Scores Stunning Late Equaliser

With just four minutes of regulation time remaining, Mallory Swanson delivered the decisive moment for the United States.

Kate Del Fava launched a superb diagonal pass towards Michelle Cooper, who initially struggled to control the ball but recovered quickly.

Cooper pulled the ball back into the penalty area, where Swanson displayed outstanding composure and technique.

The forward flicked the ball into the air, swivelled and struck a powerful effort into the far-left corner to level the score at 2-2.

The dramatic equaliser sparked celebrations among the home supporters and rewarded the Americans for their improved second-half performance.

The United States almost completed an extraordinary turnaround deep into stoppage time.

Lily Yohannes unleashed an effort that took a deflection and appeared destined for the net, but Spain goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez reacted brilliantly, diving low to her left to preserve the draw.

Valuable Result Ahead of World Cup Qualifying

Although the United States were unable to secure victory, the comeback represents an important confidence boost ahead of their upcoming competitive fixtures.

The Americans face El Salvador in a Concacaf quarter-final next month, knowing victory would secure qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Spain, meanwhile, have already booked their place at the tournament.

The reigning world champions entered Tuesday's match seeking a fifth consecutive victory following their defeat to England in April.

Spain had won the first friendly between the two nations 2-0 in Washington, with Patri Guijarro and Eva Navarro scoring the goals.

However, the United States showed considerably greater resilience in the second encounter, recovering from a difficult first half to earn a deserved share of the spoils.

With World Cup preparations gathering momentum, the result offers encouragement for the Americans while demonstrating that Spain remain a formidable opponent on the international stage.
