Duran Fires Celtic Past Hibs

Duran Fires Celtic Past Hibs

Camilo Duran netted his 10th goal of the season as Celtic came from behind to beat Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road and re-establish their four-point advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Hibs struck first through Owen Elding, who fired home after Joe Newell caught Celtic off guard with a quickly taken free-kick.

Newell had been drafted into the starting side after Martin Boyle was ruled out through illness.

However, the hosts’ lead lasted just two minutes.

Jason Kerr inadvertently headed Benjamin Nygren’s corner into his own net to bring Celtic level.

Thibaut Klidje then had an opportunity to restore Hibs’ advantage after another defensive mistake, but his attempted lob went over the bar.

Celtic punished that miss almost immediately, with Duran sweeping home a loose ball from near the edge of the penalty area.

After the interval, Mika Baur forced Raphael Sallinger into action with a long-range effort as Celtic searched for a third.

At the other end, Cameron Carter-Vickers blocked a late Josh Mulligan strike to help secure the points.

The result leaves Hibs bottom, a point behind the side above them, with their wait for a league victory stretching to two months.

Martin O’Neill’s reigning champions have now won nine of their opening 10 Premiership matches.

Hibs Search for Momentum Under Reedijk

Marink Reedijk has now lost all three matches since taking charge of Hibs, leaving Wednesday’s trip to St Mirren as his final opportunity to build confidence before next Sunday’s League Cup semi-final against Edinburgh rivals Hearts.

Newell’s performance offered some encouragement.

Having played sparingly in recent weeks, the midfielder made the most of his unexpected inclusion with an alert assist and an influential 76-minute display.

However, Hibs will be frustrated by how easily they surrendered their early advantage.

Kerr faced little pressure when he headed into his own net, with team-mate Elding the nearest player to him.

Klidje’s missed opportunity proved particularly costly.

Although controlling and finishing from the lofted diagonal pass was difficult, his failure to convert was swiftly followed by Duran’s decisive strike.

Hibs remained competitive after going behind but struggled to seriously trouble Sam Johnstone in the second half.

Sending veteran Scotland defender Grant Hanley forward in the closing stages also failed to produce an equaliser.

Celtic Win Despite Lingering Concerns

Celtic responded to their midweek Europa League defeat by Celta Vigo, when they had surrendered a lead, but their defensive performance again raised questions.

The lapse that allowed Elding to score was accompanied by several careless moments when playing out from the back.

There was also uncertainty over Alistair Johnston’s return from injury.

Introduced after half-time, he was withdrawn just 21 minutes later, while Carter-Vickers made his own comeback following a spell on the sidelines.

Celtic’s attacking ambition was evident throughout.

A deflected Callum McGregor effort, pushed wide by Sallinger, sparked the sequence of corners that led to the equaliser.

Callum Osmand also created opportunities for Kasper Hogh.

The striker failed to make clean contact with one close-range chance before being denied by Sallinger after Duran miscued another Osmand delivery.

Hogh was substituted shortly after the hour, extending Celtic’s record signing’s goalless run to 12 matches.

Celtic host Dundee United in midweek, knowing victory will increase their advantage over at least one of their nearest challengers, with second-placed Rangers visiting third-placed Hearts.

What they said

Hibernian manager Marink Reedijk: "What I saw is a team who kept on fighting and made it very difficult for Celtic. Celtic were very clinical.

"I wanted to change something in order to get a little bit of chaos. Eventually, I think it worked. Granty did a fantastic job, all credit to Granty. He was a handful for the two defenders and they didn't know how to cope with him and we created two good chances out of this. All credit to Joe Newell, who all of a sudden needed to start and he did a good job."

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill: "Absolutely delighted with it. Considering the circumstances, considering the conditions today and considering what has happened on Thursday, I thought this was our best win of the season and we didn't play particularly well in the game.

"Thankfully, we did score so quickly afterwards [the Hibs goal] and we got the winning goal. It's a difficult afternoon even in good conditions for me. I always find Easter Road really difficult."
