Sunderland Held by Leeds in Goalless Draw

Sunderland halted their run of four consecutive Premier League defeats with a 0-0 draw against Leeds United but remain bottom of the table.

Strong winds at the Stadium of Light contributed to a match short on clear chances, with both goalkeepers making important saves to keep the game goalless.

Returning Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey registered the only two attempts on target before half-time, but James Trafford denied him on both occasions.

The Leeds goalkeeper remained alert after the break, keeping out two efforts from Nilson Angulo from the edge of the penalty area.

Leeds offered more of an attacking threat in the second half.

Robin Roefs saved Tarik Muharemovic’s header from a corner before stopping Ao Tanaka’s low strike from just outside the box.

The Sunderland keeper also denied substitute Sean Longstaff in the 90th minute.

Leeds continued to press during stoppage time, but the hosts survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles to secure a point.

A fifth draw in eight league games leaves Leeds seventh, while Sunderland sit two points behind 17th-placed Crystal Palace.

Brobbey Returns but Sunderland’s Goal Drought Continues

Brobbey’s return gave Sunderland a much-needed attacking presence, although they finished without a goal for a third successive league match.

The Dutch forward had scored a hat-trick in his previous Premier League appearance, a 5-3 defeat at Manchester City on 20 September, before suffering a hamstring injury on international duty.

He threatened early against Leeds, forcing Trafford into a low save to his right with a deflected effort.

Brobbey later pressured the visiting defence to create another opening, only for the goalkeeper to smother the ball at his feet.

However, Leeds’ three centre-backs largely contained him.

Brobbey managed just 16 touches before making way for Ukrainian forward Timur Tutierov in the 65th minute.

His return offers encouragement, but Sunderland’s continued struggles in front of goal remain a concern.

Trafford Helps Leeds Maintain Defensive Strength

Trafford delivered another composed performance as Leeds recorded their third league clean sheet of the campaign.

The England international has settled well since arriving from Manchester City in August, helping Daniel Farke’s side establish one of the division’s strongest defensive records.

Leeds have conceded six goals in eight matches, with only reigning champions Arsenal allowing fewer, having let in five.

At the same point last season, Leeds had conceded 13 following their promotion.

Trafford was the busier goalkeeper until the visitors’ late spell of pressure, making several key interventions to keep Sunderland out.

Leeds’ attacking performance was less convincing.

Despite threatening more after the interval, they could not find a breakthrough, leaving their nine league goals as the joint-lowest total among teams in the top half.
