Bradford City Beat Peterborough 2-0 to Reach First Carabao Cup Quarter-Final Since 2013

Bradford City secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2013 with an impressive 2-0 victory over Peterborough United, as goals from Macaulay Gillesphey and Adam Phillips continued the Bantams' remarkable defensive run under Michael Duff.

The League One side delivered a determined performance at Mbanq Valley Parade, with Gillesphey opening the scoring in the first half before Phillips sealed the victory after the break.

The result also extended Bradford's outstanding defensive record under Duff, with the Bantams yet to concede a goal in five matches since his appointment.

Gillesphey Gives Bradford Early Advantage

Bradford made a strong start and took the lead in the 13th minute when Peterborough failed to clear Callum Connolly's dangerous corner.

Gillesphey reacted quickest at the back post, volleying home from close range to give the hosts an early advantage.

The defender had also scored against Peterborough when the two League One sides met at Valley Parade in August.

Bradford continued to threaten and thought they had doubled their lead when Gillesphey found the net again, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul.

Bobby Pointon also came close to extending the advantage, but Peterborough goalkeeper Alex Bass reacted quickly to block his effort with his chest.

Despite struggling to contain Bradford's attacking movement, Peterborough nearly equalised in first-half stoppage time when Ethan Williams saw his goalbound effort strike teammate Danny Ormerod.

Peterborough Miss Chances as Bradford Hold Firm

Peterborough emerged with renewed determination after the interval and created several opportunities to restore parity.

Bradford goalkeeper Jon McCracken produced two crucial saves to preserve his side's narrow advantage.

He first denied Owura Edwards with a sharp stop at his near post before winning a one-on-one battle against Vernon Masara.

The visitors came even closer when Williams' effort deflected off Bradford defender Matthew Pennington and struck the post.

However, Peterborough's inability to convert their chances ultimately proved costly.

The visitors were also without suspended striker Harry Leonard, the competition's leading goalscorer, leaving manager Robbie Savage without a key attacking option.

Adam Phillips Seals Bradford's Carabao Cup Progression

Having survived a period of sustained pressure, Bradford doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Phillips.

The midfielder, who had missed two earlier opportunities, made amends by converting Jake Beesley's pass, with his effort taking a deflection off Peterborough defender Lucca Mendonca.

The goal effectively ended Peterborough's hopes of mounting a comeback and secured Bradford's historic progression into the competition's final eight.

For Duff, the victory represented another important milestone in his early tenure, with Bradford maintaining their perfect defensive record across his opening five matches.

Michael Duff Praises Bradford's Attacking Opportunities

Despite the victory, Bradford manager Michael Duff admitted he was frustrated by certain aspects of his team's performance, particularly during the first half.

"It was chaotic. I wasn't particularly happy with the first half. In saying that, we had enough chances to win four games today," Duff told BBC Radio Leeds.

The Bradford boss highlighted several missed opportunities and disallowed goals that could have made the result more comfortable.

"We had two good goals disallowed, two one-on-ones, which won't even get counted as chances because Adam [Phillips] overran them, while Bobby Pointon also had a one-on-one."

Nevertheless, Duff acknowledged the positives from another victory and praised his side's ability to capitalise on a set-piece opportunity.

"Two goals, lots of positives, but there were a few things in the first half I didn't like, but we managed to get out of it by scoring from a set-play goal."

Robbie Savage Frustrated by Peterborough's Missed Chances

Peterborough manager Robbie Savage expressed his disappointment after watching his side create numerous opportunities without finding the net.

"I feel devastated. You can't come here and create so many chances, the big moments," Savage told BBC Radio Cambridge.

The Peterborough boss believed his players had enjoyed periods of dominance but criticised the defensive mistakes that contributed to both Bradford goals.

"The first goal, that's our own doing, and the second, the same," he said.

Savage also suggested that his team had Bradford under significant pressure before the hosts scored their second goal.

"At the time of the second goal, we were so much on top, even in the first half. They were on the ropes."

However, he acknowledged that Peterborough's lack of composure in front of goal ultimately determined the outcome.

"But you cannot get into the positions like we were doing again and again and again and not take those opportunities."

Bradford Dream of Another Memorable Carabao Cup Run

Bradford's progression marks their first appearance in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals since 2013, providing supporters with another memorable moment in the club's cup history.

Their defensive improvement under Duff has been particularly impressive, with five consecutive matches without conceding a goal laying the foundation for their recent success.

While Peterborough will reflect on missed opportunities and costly defensive errors, Bradford can look ahead to the quarter-finals with growing confidence.

With their place among the final eight secured, the Bantams will hope to extend their remarkable cup journey and continue building momentum under their new manager.
