Inter Miami's hopes of securing second place in the MLS Eastern Conference suffered a setback on Wednesday as Lionel Messi's side were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by FC Cincinnati, despite a spectacular goal from Luis Suarez.
After a goalless first half, the match exploded into life with four impressive goals. Suarez opened the scoring for Miami before Cincinnati struck twice in quick succession, only for substitute Riquelme Fillipi to rescue a late point for the hosts.
The result leaves Miami two points behind the New England Revolution, who strengthened their position with a 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
For Cincinnati, the draw could prove crucial in their pursuit of an automatic playoff berth. However, with two matches remaining, they remain in contention for a direct qualification spot while also facing the possibility of dropping out of the playoff picture entirely.
Inter Miami dominated possession throughout a largely uneventful first half, controlling the tempo and completing significantly more passes than Cincinnati without creating a decisive breakthrough.
That changed in the 61st minute when Rodrigo De Paul found space in midfield and delivered a pass to Casemiro on the right flank.
The Brazilian midfielder produced an excellent first-time pass with the outside of his boot, finding Suarez just inside the penalty area.
The veteran Uruguayan controlled the ball, turned sharply and unleashed a stunning curling effort into the top corner, with the ball striking the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.
The goal appeared to put Miami on course for a valuable victory, but Cincinnati responded with a remarkable comeback.
Cincinnati found their equaliser in the 80th minute through French winger Kenji Mboma Dem.
Collecting possession on the right, Dem drove towards Miami's defence, using a series of stepovers to create space before cutting inside and curling a superb effort into the far corner.
Just six minutes later, Cincinnati completed the turnaround.
Defender Samuel Gidi received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and struck a precise left-footed shot beyond Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, stunning the home supporters at Nu Stadium.
With Cincinnati suddenly leading 2-1, Miami faced the prospect of a damaging defeat in their pursuit of a higher playoff seeding.
Lionel Messi endured a frustrating evening as Cincinnati's defensive organisation and close marking limited the Argentine superstar's attacking influence.
Unable to find space for a clear shooting opportunity, Messi watched as his teammates searched for a late equaliser.
De Paul eventually created the opening, switching play towards substitute Riquelme Fillipi.
The young Brazilian attacker cut back towards the corner of the penalty area before bending an impressive effort through two defenders and into the far side of the net.
Fillipi's strike restored parity and ensured Miami avoided defeat after surrendering their earlier advantage.
Both teams had opportunities to claim all three points in the closing stages.
Suarez fired a promising chance directly at the goalkeeper, while Cincinnati midfielder Evander saw a close-range effort blocked by a defender.
Cincinnati appealed for a handball following the block, but the referee allowed play to continue.
The draw leaves Inter Miami facing a significant challenge in their pursuit of second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Miami will meet the New England Revolution on Sunday in a potentially decisive encounter, with just two points separating the teams.
A victory would strengthen Miami's chances of securing the second seed, while a draw would keep them mathematically in contention, depending on other results.
Meanwhile, Nashville SC remain at the top of the standings after securing the Supporters' Shield last weekend for the first time in club history.
With the MLS regular season approaching its conclusion, Miami must quickly rediscover their winning form to secure the strongest possible position heading into the playoffs.
