David Moyes Backs Everton Decision to Drop Jack Grealish After Newcastle League Cup Win

Everton manager David Moyes has defended the club's decision to drop Jack Grealish for disciplinary reasons ahead of Thursday's 3-1 League Cup victory over Newcastle United, emphasising the importance of maintaining high standards both on and off the pitch.

Grealish, currently on loan from Manchester City, was reportedly left out of Everton's squad after missing training ahead of the fourth-round clash at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The England international had also missed Everton's Premier League defeat to Arsenal on Saturday due to illness.

Moyes declined to reveal further details surrounding Grealish's absence but made it clear that he supported the club's disciplinary action.

"It was a club decision. I support the decision. It's something I don't really want to speak too much about," Moyes said.

Moyes Emphasises Everton's Values Amid Grealish Controversy

Despite the potential distraction surrounding Grealish, Everton delivered an impressive performance to secure their place in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Asked about his players' response, Moyes highlighted the importance of discipline and professionalism within the squad.

"I think the one thing about Everton and what they've got is they've got really good values behind it," he said.

"All the players stand up to the values, accept the values that we put out there, what we want from them on the pitch and off the pitch."

Moyes also praised his players for maintaining their focus despite the controversy.

"And from that point of view I think the players have done a brilliant job tonight, they really did."

Grealish's omission comes amid renewed scrutiny of his conduct away from football. The winger previously fell out of favour at Manchester City following several reported late-night incidents and allegations of drinking after hours.

Everton Cruise Past Newcastle to Reach League Cup Quarter-Finals

Everton made a strong start against Newcastle, establishing a commanding first-half advantage through goals from James Garner and Hayden Hackney.

Thierno Barry extended the hosts' lead in the 69th minute, effectively ending Newcastle's hopes of mounting a comeback.

Dan Burn grabbed a late consolation goal for the visitors, but Everton comfortably secured a 3-1 victory to progress to the last eight.

The Toffees will now face League Two side Fleetwood Town in December's quarter-finals after the fourth-tier club produced a stunning upset against Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday.

Moyes Targets League Cup Glory as Everton's Trophy Drought Continues

Everton will head into their quarter-final against Fleetwood with an opportunity to move one step closer to ending their long wait for major silverware.

The Merseyside club have never won the League Cup, while their last major trophy came in 1995 when they lifted the FA Cup.

Moyes acknowledged the growing excitement surrounding Everton's cup run but remained cautious about looking too far ahead.

"I think the minute you use the word quarterfinals then you start to think, 'this sounds good'," he said.

"I think we're pleased that we've been able to get to this stage of the competition. If we can keep it going great, obviously."

With Everton progressing and Grealish's disciplinary situation attracting attention, Moyes will be hoping his squad can maintain its focus as the club pursues a place in the League Cup semi-finals.
